You could have some play in your motor mounts. They are made of rubber and being your over 10 years old the rubber probably has shrank and is allowing the engine to shift a bit. My 2001 is doing the same.
I had someone shift it from park to drive and back to park while I watched the engine running with the hood up.

Why is car abruptly jolting to a stop in reverse and not moving?

Sounds like the transmission is shifting into both reverse and a forward gear at the same time. Time for a tranny overhaul. But first check the transmission fluid level.

Engine stops while trying to park, car jolts when going 35+ mph.

Try replacing the sparkplug wires. These are all common symptoms of bad sparkplug wire on a DIS ignition system. I would also suggest changing the fuel filter. I tell all my coustomers to replace their fuel filter at every 3'rd oil change i.e. 80 to 90K. hope this helps:)

When you shift into gear from park, our Jeep jerks a bit. We have it up for sale and potential buyers are afraid its the transmission that is going. Is that always the case, is there something we can...

its only the transmision taking up the slack of the fluid drive.a tip is to allways have your foot hard on the brake when changing into gear(safety factor) now if it were a limo, that would not be right......

Will not shift into 3rd until 55mph its an automatic what is possible cause?

Check your auto transmission levels. Slow, often jerky, gear shifting is often accompanied by a bit of a jolt when putting it into drive from park or neutral. When fluids are low the torque converter impeller has to work harder to get pressure up and therefore it is slower at shifting to the next gear . Low transmission fluids also lead to poor fuel consumption.

There is a small jolt when shifting from Park to reverse. What does this mean?

Is there a "clunk" noise that goes along with the "jolt" ?
It is either a loose or worn, mount, or you may have a drive train problem.

Corolla kicks/jolts when shifting gears.

I am trying to understand your problem. Check engine mounts. Have a driver in the car, hood open. Start car, foot on brakes, shift from park to reverse and back again. Shift through all gears, look for unusual engine movements around engine mounts area. Left foot on brakes, press gas in drive and reverse;watch for excessive engine movements. Be careful as you perform these steps. You may also want to check drive axles. Keep me updated.
