Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier
Sounds like a bad connection.Either the positive wire/connection at back of bulb holder is broken or corroded or you will need to pull the bulb back out and clean inside holder with brillo pad.

Pull the bulbs and check to see if you have voltage going to the socket. If not, check wiring, and check for sany damage to wiring, harnesses, etc.
