Is the temp gauge going up and down constantly? Do what jcol7 recommends... I best bet is that the thermostat is bad and on the other hand, check the temp sensor, which is located right below the distributor...

Several things could be wrong, 1st check the coolant level, the Radiator core could have some type of restriction, should be flushed, faulty thermostat, electric fans faulty or non operational, your radiator cap not maintaining proper pressure, finally your vehicles timing. start with the easiest and least expensive solutions and move on from there, I hope this helps you, Best of Luck!

The sixth generation featured updated styling although less radical than previous redesigns. Suspension and engine options were available along with their first Natural Gas Powered Civic, the GX. From 1996-2000 the Civic was sold under the CX, DX, EX, EXR, HX, LX, and for Canada, SE, and Si trims; all base models were made with 1.6L engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (Honda D engine). The CX, DX, and LX all have D16y7 non-VTEC engines; whereas the EX has a D16y8 VTEC, and the HX has D16y5 VTEC-E. The USDM Si and Canadian SiR came with a DOHC (B16A2 VTEC). The first civic SI coupe EM1 was introduced in 1999 until 2000. Europe saw a DOHC 1.6 VTI hatch and sedan and a DOHC 1.8VTI engine was available for the Domani related five-door liftback and estate..

I have a 1996 honda civic vtec, my battery will not stay charged took my car to autozone, checked the alternator, battery and there both good. what could be the problem why isnt the battery staying...

I not that familiar with the honda civic vtec, but most cars have a voltage regulator for the battery. Many of the new alternators have this item belt-in, but others are separate components. You may want to check to see what your design is for your model.

My 96 civic 1.6 dohc vtec wont vtec any suggestions why this would happen

vtec is controlled by oil pressure so first check the oil, if it is low that can cause it. if you change your oil the way you should then the solenoid could be bad on most Hondas it is right by the oil filter.

Will a cylinder head from a 1996 honda civc 1.5l non vtec work correctly on a 93 honda civic 1.5l non vtec

The 1996 civic has a 1.6L b-16 engine. The only difference between the v-tec and non v-tec engine is the dual overhead cam i believe. The 93 civic also should have a b-16 engine in it. The cylinder head should work.......

I have a 2005 honda civic si recently my check engine light came on showing the following codes they are P1259 and P1166

P1259 is a code for vtec malfunction usually cause by a bad vtec solenoid, vtec pressure sensor, low oil level, bad connection. Was oil change done? May want to check the oil level. P1166 is a code for a primary o2 sensor 1.

What the previous owner told you could be correct(that is 33mpg), B16A1 Vtec engine were made for power and fuel efficiency. Your clutch upgrade would not affect your fuel consumption unless you feel anything slipping during acceleration. I say you give your engine a good tune up and compare the milage again.
