Question about 1988 Toyota Celica Liftback

I have an 1988 Toyota Celica G/T.It hasn't been starting with the key I'm on my 2nd starter.But it does start when I stick a screw driver in the part that stickes out of the starter with another screw driver touching a bolt then touching the 2 screw drivers together.Can you help me with figuring out I need to look at????

    Im not sure if your understanding me correctly right now for me to be able to start my car I have to pull out the little piece that has wires connected to the starter then i put a flat head screw driver were the little piece would go then i take another screw driver and touch a bolt on the side then i have to touch the to screw drivers then it starts???

There may be a problem with the ground of the starter. The negative should run from the starter to the engine block and back to the battery via a cable connected to the block. Have the area where you attach the starter cleaned out using a wire brush or any cleaning tool that you have. Do the same with the bolts. Make sure to tighten the screws after cleaning.

Anyway, it sounds like either your ignition switch is bad, or the ground wire for the steering column is loose.

!996 toyota celica gt stalled while driving and won't start up again.


Bendix has gone out on the starter. Replace starter. The spinning is the starter but it would not have gone out while "driving" so you may have another problem once you replace the starter.

Nothing happens when i turn the key


Hey the 80s celica's had a TSB problem concerning the starting of the cars, so it is a factory wiring problem, I have a 1988 celica and all I did was bypass the ignition with a high amp switch straight to the starter and to + on the battery, hope this helps.

look under intake manifold under car or under exhaust manifold it could be in the rear of the engine or in the front but check those places.

Won't start


try to turn the engine by hand on the front cranshaft pulley with a socket, if turns engine is ok, but if not engine is gone,
and not only check the powers also check for a good ground,
and clen the batterie conectors very wheel even if they look clean electrical systems are very tricky
