Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

===
clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

SEE sample picture HERE
===

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

===

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

Take it for a test drive.

A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

  • The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
  • Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
  • Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
  • Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
  • Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
  • Replace the EGR valve
Hope this helps

Check your EGR system for vacuum to valve, valve may be faulty, or may just need cleaning, and DPFE sensor working properly if applicable. Also check tube for carbon build up, causing restriction.

What is the drive cycle for this vehecle?

Some Ford vehicles manufactured in 2004 - 2005 required harness replacement to make them compatible with emission testing equipment. A factory service bulletin (FSB) was issued for Fords but may have been expanded to include Mercury as well. You may have to have a Ford dealer check to determine whether your Mercury was modified.

Failed emissions test

First step is to have the code or codes read.If the "check engine light" is on there will be a reason and should be a code or codes to be read.Once you have the codes,you can determine the correction needed to get that "check engine light" out and a valid emissions test completed.Get back to us with the codes found.

Replaced egr ,cleaned throttlrbout checked all the vacum lines and still getting code 401 air-flow.I can't find the problem? it's also making it use more fuel?

Sometime when you buy after mapket part{s}, {part store} the computer can not reconize then.when you buy egr.need vin # to get right one, emission system will not operate correctly Sometimes Dealer is best when getting parts like this u may pay more but is worth it. Make sure port holes are clear - clean when you install the valve

Have a 401 code have changed all emission parts and cleaned throttle body any solution

Engine size? year? This code is for insufficient egr, usually caused by clogged egr passeges or a bad DPFE sensor. Open egr valve, if the engine idles real rough or stalls, replace the DPFE sensor. If the idle does not change, then take the egr valve off and clean the passages. You cant just keep changing parts hoping you get lucky and change the correct one.

Engine check light, code 401 low egr vacum egr

The EGR and the lift sensor may look perfect from the outside but the under side of the EGR valve and the EGR passage (small tube) are the REAL WORKING parts.

The carbon inside the EGR passage tube and the underside of the EGR valve must to clean out.

Make sure you has a NEW EGR gasket before you start the job.

It's a 2-3 hours job.

If you do not clean the EGR passage tube the Nox emission will get higher (check you past emission reports).

My system has reported some codes. po0455 and po401. what does it mean? and how can i fix it

401 is EGR flow insufficient, and 455 is a leak in Evaporative emission control system. First off, make sure gas cap is on tight, and threads & "O" ring are clean on cap & filler neck. Secondly, I'd look at all vacuum lines etc in area of purge canister & EGR system, for loose, cracked, and /or broken off.

Check engine light and other inspection failures

Sounds like an intake air temperature sensor replacement would be a good place to start, then clear codes & see what happens.

Input from anyone who wants to comment... Emissions Inspection??

Obama is working on a changeover as we speak. A faulty gas guage would not show up on any test. The guage is attached to a floating device inside the gas tank. Sometimes the float can get stuck.
