Question about 1984 Chrysler New Yorker

My problem with my 1984 Chrysler New Yorker is very common. Rough idle, and most mechanics won't work on it. What can I do to fix it ?

Change plugs, wires, and clean the carb. Just a basic tune up. If you don't know how to do the carb, just, at least, spray som e carb cleaner through it. It doesn;t get to all the places it should, but it will help somewhat. Adjust the air screws to get highest idle, without any misfiring. Check timing.

Rough idle loss power


Hi ~ This is going to sound crazy but it may work. I had a 1984 Chrysler New Yorker, stock. having the same power loss problem and I just changed the gas cap for a new locking one, and it ran great, something to do with the vacuum build up in the tank. not venting properly, apparently. I have and 84 chrysler new yorker it start up but when driving and i stop at a stop light it wants to die idles real low then somtimes dies any help


I'm going to assume it is the 2.2 engine with or without turbo.
It should have an idle air control valve that the computer uses to control idle speed. I would check that first. The throttle body may also be dirty.
If it has the 2.6 engine you have a carb that has an idle control motor to check.

I have a 1984 chrysler new yorker that i just put a new radiator in it. After i got it in i tried to start it. it ran for a few minutes and then acted like it was starving for air and getting too much gas...


I would say that the choke is staying on or the float is not controlling the fuel level . Remove the needle and seat and check for something holding the needle of the seat.

Chrysler new yorker with a 3.0 liter v-6 engine burns and smells oil and stalls when hot. Can anything be done other than change the engine to fix or improve this problem?


Bad valve guides and seats were pretty common item on those 3.0L engines in those days. Caused oil to leak in beside guides and into cylinder, especially at idle, or after hard acceleration, then let off (highest vacuum ) when warm. If your handy at all, heads can be done pretty reasonably at engine shop, or even get a set of heads from newer engine, when problem was cured.

I think you have a suspect oil pressure sender unit. Replace it as they are cheap and need to be reliable and it will be cheaper than getting the oil pressure tested. If the light still stays on with the new sender you may have internal wear or a partial blockage. If the light stays on you need to have it urgently checked by a mechanic or you could risk serious engine damage.
