Question about 2007 Ford Shelby GT 500 Convertible New Cars

2 Answers

I have an '07 shelby GT with the standard mustang GT parking brake handle assembly. I purchased the handle from a Shelby GT 500 (only difference is leather covered handle vs. rubber). I have removed the console cover and have access to the 2 top bolts on the assembly and the brake light connection. There are 2 additional bolts that cannot be accessed from the top...how do I access them to remove the old and put in the new? Any tricks to unattaching and reattaching the cable? thanks for the help!

Rylee: I just need to know how to get access to the 2 lower bolts on the handle assembly. Can I get to them from the interior or do I get under the car? If the access is from the interior and I need to remove the whole console and carpet, do I need to remove the seat to do this?

rylee: Thank you for all of your help.....I still haven't gotten my main question answered however...I will try to word it differently: The parking brake assemble is attached by 4 bolts....I can access the top 2 ....how do I get to the lower 2 bolts that I cannot see? Are you telling me that if I remove the entire console (not just the top) and pull back the carpet that I will see the other 2 bolts? Everything else makes sense. thnaks, Ned.

Thank you...I have access to a lift and just wanted to know if I was going to find the access to the other 2 bolts once I got under there. Very helpful!

You will have to get at the other two bolts from the bottom. You may want to put the car up on ramps. The cable can be turned slighly when pulling with needle nose pliers.

You can go to autozone.com and register for full free online repair manual with everything you could need for your car.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Please check the procedure for replacing the handle and detaching the cable--

  • To remove the carpet, the complete console assembly will have to be removed, as well as the kick panels, door scuff plates, and the rear quarter trim panels on convertibles. Start at one corner and roll the carpet back, being careful to not get stuck on the shifter or parking brake handle.
  • Speaking of parking brake handles, with the console removed, simply insert a small screwdriver, or a nail through the retaining hole found on the passenger side of the handle. This will lock the handle and allow you to unhook the parking brake cable.
  • Unbolt the parking brake handle and install the new leather Cobra unit. Don't forget to swap the parking brake switch and wiring to the new handle assembly and remove the retaining pin.
  • You’ll also need to remove the 2 cables from the Brake assembly.
  • PLEASE NOTE the adjusting bolt below. It attaches the cable which connects to the metal plate connector (and the two cables from the rear brakes hook onto this connector). LOOSEN it to give some slack in the line. Then simply unhook the two rear brake cables from the metal connector thing.
  • Attach these to the new ebrake assembly and reinstall is the reverse of removal. Simply remember to hook up the ground to the same bolt and install the sensor. Tighten the adjuster bolt enough so that it exerts enough pressure on the cables. When its right, the handle should click a couple times when you pull up on it.
See these steps for cable replacement(if you want to replace the cables as well)--
CAUTION: Do not overtighten the parking brake cable adjustment nut. Overtightening will cause the brakes to drag or lock up.

1. Remove the access cover inside the floor console bin. (see figure 1)
2. Position the parking brake handle up at the fourth notch to access the adjuster nut.
3. NOTE: The rod is staked to prevent the removal of the nut. (see figure 2)
Loosen, but do not remove, the parking brake cable adjuster nut.
4. Apply the tension by tightening the parking brake cable adjustment nut until there is no lash in the system with the handle in the lowered position.
5. Cycle the parking brake control 4 times and adjust as necessary.
6. Lower the parking brake handle and install the access cover.
7. Test the parking brake system for proper operation.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

    Hi

    It
is easy to cut the old ones and replace them. As they are difficult to cut with
dykes, use a dermal with a fiberglass cut off wheel or a pneumatic whizzed-wheel.
Also apply some brake parts cleaner, white grease or similar lube for
the contact points on the backing plate. Also, the adjustment isn’t from the
back or under the car. You’ll need to remove the boot around the parking brake
lever and flip up the plastic cover and you will see a 10mm nut on a threaded
shaft. You’ll need to loosen that before starting (usually about 10 clicks and
put a mark on the top of the bolt to keep a track of it. When you are done
tighten it back up as appropriate.

Please do rate the solution and
    revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

    Rylee

If you get in touch with the company that built the model they should gladly send you replacement assembly instructions. My sons even got missing parts for kits this way. Hope this helps.

Difference between Shelby/Ford and AC Cars?

The difference - huge. Carrol Shelby designed the power plant for the AC cobra, and the 69 AC cobra had the 426 emblem on the side, but the motor was actually a 429. Only year this was produced. To this day it is one of the fastest cars ever produced for commercial sale. The AC cobra was capable of going from dead stop Zero to 100 mph back dead stop zero in just over 11 seconds, and the story goes Mr. Shelby would tape a $100 bill to the visor on the passanger side, and tell the passanger if they could grab it as he went through the gears it was theirs - no one was able to boast this claim. The ford shelby fastback is a mustang that Carrol Shelby and Ford collaborated over. Shelby's 426 was put in the Ford Cobra, but the heavier, less aerodynamic Mustang had nothing on the AC cobra. The AC got it's body style from the old Austin Healy (I think - having a brain moment). Fundamentally, the AC cobra's are the american muscle car collecters holy grail. Everyone want's one, but no one can afford one - for an original 64 or 65 AC Cobra you can expect to pay $250,000. For the 69 with the 429 up the price to $500,000. There are a million kit car cobra's out there, and the owners act like they have something special - all they have is an over rated VW with a Cobra body kit. And boy do they get mad when you point out the imperfections!
