Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada
My Dad has a 98 bravada with the smart trac AWD system (Dad now calls it stupid trac).
The Problem is it does not engage the front wheels when the rear tires are spinning. Dad says he was stuck in as little as 2 inches of snow several times last winter. He took it in to a dealer and they told him you have to floor it or the front wheels won't engage. that doesn't sound very safe if you are in your driveway or a parking lot. he then took it to a couple of transmission shops and they wanted hundreds of dollars just to diagnose the problem. Does anyone have any idea why it would not engage until the rear wheels are spinning at 40 or 50mph?
he has just about given up on ever having AWD. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Has is ever worked before or just started acting properly. Couple of things, do the front wheels engage peroid even when at a high rate of speed during slippage or do then not period? If they are engaging then you have possibly a sensor issue that isn't detecting the slippage properly causing late engagement. If not engaging could be several things, simple as wheel sensor, transfer case or fron drive shaft.
