I have a 1999 saturn sl1 and my tailights and dashlights quit working. i changed the fuse and it blew. so i changed the fuse again and it lasted about three minutes before it blew again. where do i start...

Okay, these are hard to find. I assume you have no problem when you do not have the Tailights on? This would mean problem could run all the way to rear taillights.

But if the problem is not related to putting power through the wires to the taillights it is under the dash area. You would have a short from the power supply to the lightswitch. You have a Relay for the lights in the Powerbox.

Go to Website and register your vehicle for a free wiring diagram and Powerbox layout.

You can then see for yourself about how the dashlights are grouped with the taillights. You could have a bad Relay.

Look at how the taillights get their power and this will show you a color/coded path from the front to rear of your car. As I said earlier, it is important to know if the lights only short when they are turned on by the headlight switch.

If they short out all the time, regardless of the headlight switch being on or off, then the short is more towards the front, between the dash and Relay or the Relay itself.

Use the built-in cutoff points as a way of eliminating the shorted part. The headlight switch is a cutoff point. Power rearward is halted with the except of the Brakelights. If the Brakelights work fine, the bulb sockets are probably grounded properly.

If the fuse pops with the headlamps off, the power is not going rearward and you are okay.

Top Tailight is out. Does the whole light need to

Your rear taillight bar that sits atop the back area are LED lights and if the whole bar is out then it needs to be replaced as a unit. You can find the part at and it is $50.79 before shipping. The part number is DORMAN Part # 923203 moreinfo2.png {#15170955}

The three wires to the tow lights have been cut, and i cant find where in the harness they are cut can i bypass it all and just rerun new wires?

Yes. But do you have seperate yellow turn signal lights in the rear or do the turn signals work independant of the brake lights? If yes then you need to wire in a taillight converter. It takes your seperate left & right turn signals combines them with your brake lights on 2 wires instead of 3 leaving you with your normal 4 wires in total instead of 5. 1 Left turn & brake light. 1 Right turn & brake. 1 Taillight. 1 Ground. = 4 wires in total. If you dont have seperate rear turn signals just find left turn wire in taillight assembly, Right turn wire & Taillight & a good ground & you are done. On trailer plug yellow is left, green is right ,brown is tailight & white is ground.

How do I remove and replace a tailight assembly?

open the tailgate. look for plug looking covers on the black or grey plastic part of light assembly... open the flap and you will see bolts with a +(phillips). they are kind of a U SHAPED cover that will flip open with a pick or pocket screwdriver, like little flaps or doors. remove the bolts, then on the out side of the lend assembly...with the palm of ur hand, tap the lens assembly back toward the rear of the vevicle , wiggle and use force when tapping with ur palm. since u are replaceing it, dont worry about damageing the old assembly. switch over wire harness and bulbs if necessary to the the new lens assembly and install in reverse order of removal.

All lights in right tailight out

What have you been doing in the trunk lately? I heard about a guy partying in his trunk. :) If you've been doing a lot of hauling lately you may have caused something to knock a wire loose in the trunk. Check for that. Also look for signs of moisture. You may need to pull the bulbs and dry them out and then pull the whole assembly and replace the moisture seal. Since the right side gets power from the left side light assembly, check that side for a loose wire as well.

How do i remove the tailights?

inside the boot, remove the pastic covers which give access to the lights. Then unscrew the light clusters -some fixings are difficult but not totally inaccessible- and remove the taillights cluster.

cover the whole housing with a quality bath or shower silocone sealant and re-assemble.

worked for me - 1 year free !
