Question about 2003 Mazda Tribute

Coolant dripping from a coroded pipe under the engine comparment. About 8 inches in from the front wheel just to left of opening in metal plating.

Did you use a different type of cooland other than dealer? same thing happened to me on my vw jetta when i used auto parts brand they were no leaks on mine either. on yours did you check for leaks that could also be the problem some times hoses leak tiny drops hoses sometimes get a needle size hole.

Need to know where the thermostadt is at. Have leakage but can't find any hoses etc leaking.


If you have the V6 (2.5L) engine, be advised: it's a wearing task. Just getting to the radiator drain plug can be a problem without a 3/8 inch drive ratchet, a 3 inch extension, a universal joint. and a 19 mm socket. The drain plug is on the passenger side of the radiator on the engine side. The 19mm socket will fit over the drain plug to turn it open.
The coolant plumbing on this engine is the craziest I have ever seen. The thermostat is on the rear face of the engine (where the radiator hoses connect), but not on the upper hose where it connects to the upright pipe with the radiator cap on it, it is on the lower hose connection. Pull that hose off the housing, and remove the three bolts holding the thermostat housing to the engine. It will help if you first remove the big air inlet hose from the air filter housing to the throttle body. I wouldn't even bother with the thermostat till you have found the leak. Is any coolant leaking from the front of the engine, dripping off the bottom behind the crank pulley? That would be a water pump problem or SEAL, an o-ring on the back of the water pump. Now get on the driver's side and look around on the rear of engine nearest the firewall where engine and transaxle mate. Look down there for signs of coolant coming from rear of engine and running down onto the transaxle case. There is a metal pipe laying in the valley below the lower intake manifold, connecting the water pump at the front and the rear housing where the radiator hoses and heater hoses connect. This metal pipe uses an o-ring for a seal into the water pump, and the same size o-ring to connect to the rear housing. If one of those o-rings is leaking, you have a big problem getting to it.. I took the rear housing off once (never again!), Now I'm taking the water pump off to fix a leak. The water pump is run by the timing belt, so the front of engine needs to be stripped down, and the timing belt removed to take off the water pump. That metal pipe is held in place by a bracket with one bolt on the rear of engine; it may require taking the lower intake off (again) to get to both of those pesky o-rings. I hope you don't have the same problem, and if you have the 4 cylinder engine, the thermostat is a snap to replace, plus you don't have that crazy plumbing problem.

I have a 97 passport and my engine coolant keeps leaking out of a small hole right above the flywheel on the back of the engine block. Is this hole supposed to be there and if so where would the leak...


I Have a 94 Rodeo,3.2l v6 I had the same problem...Yes it is a drain hole..You might have a coolant pipe running under your lower intake if so it's the "O" ring on that pipe..It runs from the upper radiator hose to rear of block...50 cent part. If you are doing it yourself check the other heater hose metal pipe O ring also. towards the front under the thermostat housing. I just fixed mine.I had antifreeze coming out the inspection plates on the trans took off the upper plenium and lower intake and the rubber O ring was shot.Clean out flange use a wire V shaped wheel. make sure the Ring fits Snug on the coolant pipe,dry fit in the flange.( Got assorted sizes at NAPA) put a good coat of Black RTV silicon on O ring,And some in the hole itself press pipe in hole and install the bolts.Allow to set for 3hrs. Again this is on a 94 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 L V6 5spd. Hope that helps you

My husband and I are trying to get to our thermostat to change in my 2002 rendezvous, but there is a metal pipe in the way that we can't figure out how to remove. just behind the pipe, is a metal plate...

The pipe that you referred to is the exhaust crossover pipe. Below I've included removal and installation instructions.

Also, the procedure for bleeding the coolant system is critical; if you need those instructions please post the question.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
3. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
4. Remove the inlet radiator hose from the engine.
5. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
6. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts.
7. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield.
8. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts.
9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the exhaust crossover pipe.
2. Install the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts.
3. Tighten the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts to 18 lb ft.
4. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield.
5. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts.
6. Tighten the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts to 89 lb in.
7. Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
8. Install the inlet radiator hose to the engine.
9. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant.
10. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
11. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.

I recently changed the alternador belt on a 2001 chevy metro lsi, afterwards whenever i start the car , there is this rattling noise and when i opened the hood to check , to the left of the alternador...


Water Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Metro
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Air cleaner
    • A/C compressor suction pipe bracket, if equipped
    • Loosen the water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove them at this time
    • Right side lower splash shield
    • A/C compressor drive belt
    • Lower alternator cover plate
    • Water pump/alternator drive belt
    • Crankshaft pulley
    • Water pump pulley
    • Timing belt
    • Dipstick tube
    • Upper alternator bracket from the water pump
    • Water pump and discard the gasket
    To install: Fig. 1: To ensure a tight seal, be sure gasket surfaces are properly prepared - Metro 7922z704.gif

  4. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  5. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump with new gasket. Torque the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    • New rubber seals
    • Upper alternator adjusting bracket
    • Oil dipstick tube
    • Timing belt
    • Water pump and crankshaft pulleys. Leave the water pump pulley bolts hand-tight
    • Alternator drive belt
    • Lower alternator cover plate. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped
    • Right side lower splash shield.
    • Torque the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and torque the alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  7. Install or connect the following:
    • A/C compressor suction pipe bracket, if equipped
    • Air cleaner
    • Negative battery cable
  8. Refill the cooling system.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
Prizm 1.6L ENGINE
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable and properly support the engine
    • Right side engine mount and support
    • Upper and middle timing belt covers
  4. If equipped with power steering remove the following components:
    • Front transmission mount
    • Radiator fan motor
    • Coolant reservoir
    • Upper radiator hose
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector from the dipstick tube
    • Dipstick tube
    • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sending unit
    • Coolant inlet pipe

    To install:
  6. Install or connect the following:
    • New O-ring and Water pump. Torque the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
    • Coolant hose to the pump
    • Coolant inlet pipe. Torque the fastener to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    • Dipstick tube. Torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • ECT sending unit to the dipstick tube
    • Engine wire harness. Torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • Radiator fan. Torque the bolts to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    • Upper radiator hose
    • Coolant reservoir
    • Front transmission mount. Torque the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    • Upper and middle timing belt covers. Torque the bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
    • Right side transmission mount and insulator. Torque the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    • Negative battery cable
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
1.8L ENGINE
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Drive belt
    • Right side lower splash shield
    • Water pump and discard the O-ring
    To install:
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • New O-ring and water pump. Torque the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    • Right side lower splash shield
    • Drive belt
    • Negative battery cable
  5. Fill the cooling system.
  6. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

Water leak drips on leftside but is not from water pump. seems to come from back side and runs tword the front, shows wet down low and in back close to firewall.


There is a metal pipe on the back head that has coolant in it going to the heater core. Also there are also small rubber hoses (2) on the driver side toward the rear of the engine. Run your hand under the above listed items to see if you can feel coolant. If the above don't show any leak then it could be a head gasket leaking to the outside of the engine. Good Luck

Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Exhaust manifold, if equipped with n automatic transaxle Right front wheel Splash shield Water pump sprocket access plate from the timing cover

  5. Attach Water Pump Sprocket Holding Tool J 43651to the sprocket using the access plate bolts to secure the tool to the engine front cover.

To install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the water pump hub to align the hub to the water pump sprocket.
    Water pump and bolts Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe Engine front cover bolt and engine block to water pump bolt. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) 2 of the water pump sprocket to water pump bolts
  2. Remove the threaded stud.
    Last water pump sprocket to water pump bolt and tighten the sprocket bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Remove the tool.
    Water pump sprocket access plate to the timing cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Splash shield Right front wheel Exhaust manifold, if removed
  4. Fill the cooling system.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING Do not rotate the flex coupling more than 4 degrees or damage may occur. Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S) electrical connector Exhaust manifold heat shield Coolant inlet housing bolt through the exhaust manifold Exhaust manifold brace-to-manifold bolt Manifold-to-exhaust pipe studs Coolant inlet housing-to-water pump cover bolt Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold by pulling it downward Coolant inlet pipe from the oil pan Brake vacuum pipe from the camshaft housing Exhaust manifold from the cylinder head Heater hose from the heater outlet pipe Timing chain cover and tensioner Water pump cover-to-engine bolts 3 water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts Water pump and cover assembly Water pump cover from the pump

Losing coolant from pipes above rear axle on kia


It sounds like a leak in the water jacket of your motor, it could be just a head gasket if you're lucky. Also check for a leak in the coolant pipes them selves usualy at the connections.
