If you engage the 4wd in the cab and it doesnt engage, but you can move the arm at the front axle and then it does engage, you probably have a vacuum leak causing the actuator to not work. That model truck was bad about that. There is now an aftermarket kit you can install that works manually from inside the cab to engage/disengage the front axle.

If it is electronic activated 4 WD, this system has a transfer case control module located in the dash behind the climate controls. It can go bad and cause the system not to engage the 4WD. May want to check power and ground to the module first.

Have a 1985 chevy s10 pick up & the 4 wheel drive wont engage. I already replaced the solenoid on top of the transfer case, & it still wont engage. I can hear the transfer case engage & I have vacum at the...

Make sure that the vacuum hose connector is connected AND connected correctly at the transfer case and at the front differential. If that is all right and the front differential still doesn't engage, then you need to test the vacuum actuator at the front differential.

The 4 wheel wont engage but divers good in 2 wheel

Most of the time its the actuator on the front axel. GM has had a problem with these units. If you put the 4-wd shifter in low range is the transfer case shifting into low? You will notice this because it will feel very torquie but the vehicle speed will be drasticly reduced. If it goes into low range then replace the actuator on the front axel.

Is this engine normally slow on pull of?.... on d 4x4 models ? is it easy to disconnect the transfer case and vehicle to function normaal without 4 wheel drive?

Slow? Depends on what you are pulling? Is it just the truck itself? Or are you trying to pull a backhoe? The only thing you will disconnect on the transfer case is the propeller shaft, and it will run fine, but I don't think you will gain anything by it. The transfer case does nothing till it is engaged, it doesn't even spin, the power goes through to the rear, untill you put it in 4 wd, Hope this helps.

Engage 4 WD 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

There usually are instructions above the sun visor. To engage, just pull the lever into the gear you want while rolling. (work best that way) use low only for pulling something out of mud etc. try to avoid using on dry pavement as that will wear the transfer case faster. Use N setting if your vehicle needs to be towed. After using if it fails to disengage, usually backing up about twenty feet will fix that.

Have a 1993 f150 4x4 transfer case sounds like its engaging but there is a grinding noise when she goes in 4x4 only checked transfer case its fine could the hubs be gone over the summer with out use.

Try removing the front drive shaft from the transfer case to the front differential. With the vehicle on 4 jack stands and the front drive shaft removed attempt to place the vehicle into 4 WD. You may have to start the engine if the vehicle uses a vacuum actuator module to engage the front wheels. When you get an indication that the vehicle is in 4WD try turning the front wheels by hand and see it you hear the same grinding noise .... engage the hubs and try again. Usually if the transfer case is ok then the problem is in the front differential or one of the many universal joints that connect all of the elements together. Check the U joints on the front drive shaft for play as well as the U joints on each of the front wheels.

4 wd low range will sometimes engage 4wd high will never engage

I had a very similar problem with my 98 gmc 2500. The 4 low would engage - though the upshifts were erratic, but no 4 high though the light sometimes came on. I changed out the electric shift solenoid or whatever it is called, on the transfer case and it worked fine after that. A fairly simple fix that can be done in 15 minutes. Hope this helps.
