Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

1 Answer

I just bought this truck and last night was the first time I had to gas up. Afterwards the low fuel sensor kept coming on and the gas gauge would go from full to empty and it would do this off and on all night as we we're driving.

My Mitsubishi Outlander turns over but won't start it was fine when I parked it last night. My fuel gauge was low also I had to park on a hill could this have caused it.

The vehicle needs to be level so the fuel pump will pick up the gas and send it forward or go get some gas to put in it to raise the fuel level

Lacey, Your fuel pump has failed. I have a '97 Ck1500 P.U. and just went through the exact issue. So here is what has happened. Since you have been running your tank low on gas, any debris that is located in your tank (and there is a lot) has been sucked into your fuel filter, causing it to fail. Here is the good news. For about $80 you can fix it in about 2hrs. You simply buy a new pump, and pump screen (it protects your pump from sucking the crud off the bottom of the tank. In about 3 hours you can drop the tank, remove the pump and fuel gauge sending unit, and rebuild, and replace all necessary parts. It is very simple. In doing this you will probably find the reason your gas gauge has stopped working.

Low gas indicator light does not come on when guage is on E

The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. It is rare for a Toyota fuel pump to fail but if your running it that low on gas your not helping last any longer. I would suggest not letting your tank get below a quarter tank. That way you will never have to worry about whether or not the light will come on. Typical there would be about a gallon or less of fuel in the tank before the light would come on. If it did come on you would have about 20 miles r so of fuel left in the tank.

2003 chevy malibu gas gauge always on empty, replaced the fuel pump

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.

Fuel guage reads empty and low fuel light is on

{: ) If the fuel tank is actually low in fuel, this will be a normal thing. You can also check for fuel leaks. But for example, the last time you remembered it was at half level and after driving for a few miles, you made a stop for some reason, and off course you were expecting that you still have more fuel remaining to take you home or elsewhere. When you start the car again, the gauge suddenly reads empty. This is a classic symptom of a failing fuel level sensor that needs to be replaced.
An engine light may or may not come on. A better option is to check the vehicle using a scan tool to retrieve and clear codes that may have set, Usually, when the engine computer detects a fault in the fuel system, it will set a code, and the fuel gauge will default to zero regardless if your tank is actually full or half. The scan tool can also monitor and determine if the fault is from your gauge, the fuel level sensor, or from the engine control module.
Wiring problems, although very unlikely, can be a possible cause too especially if the vehicle was previously serviced or repaired, and some wire or connector could have been knocked off accidentally or neglected afterwards.

All dash gauge related

CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, IF ITS LOW THE LIGHT CAN GO ON AND OFF OVER BUMPS. YOU MAY ALSO NEED BRAKES. THE FLUID IS IN THE CALIPERS.

THE FUEL GAGE PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR.

Fuel Gauge reads empty, but tank IS full

the float in your gas tank seems to have water in it....water is heavier than gas, that's why gas floats on top of water....try putting something like HEAT in it to dry up the water in your tank....
