Torque spec for shocks


top bolt if it's a stud and bushing type gets tightened until the threads run out - usually where the bushings squash pretty good. the nut on top will stop turning. Other fasteners tighten to about 50 lbs or so depending on the size of the bolt or nut. small bolts like 5/16, 3/8, 10mm shaft size get about 30 lbs. Torque is all about the size of the bolt ( the diameter) . Large fasteners like 1/2 in. and above get 50 to 80 lbs. . hope this was helpful

First you need to know the diameter of the bolts and the type of thread ie 3/8 N/C or 5/16 N/F then look at the type of bolt ie plain steel or high tensile SAE grade 3, 4, or 6, once you know this go to a general purpose bolt torque chart, and derive the torque spec info.
If the water pump is cast iron use the full torque specification.
If the water pump is alloy then reduce the torque spec 10%

Torque settings for main and bigend bearings


First you need to know the diameter of the bolts and the type of thread ie 3/8 N/C or 5/16 N/F then look at the type of bolt ie plain steel or high tensile SAE grade 3, 4, or 6, once you know this go to a general purpose bolt torque chart, and derive the torque spec info.
If the engine block is cast iron use the full torque specification.
If the engine block is alloy then reduce the torque spec 10%

Most people don't bother using a torque wrench to tighten a thermostat housing.

It is more important to be careful and tighten each bolt a little at a time. You do not want to warp, crack, miss align the part you are bolting.

It does not take a lot of torque to seal a thermostat housing. I would guess somewhere between 15 and 20 ft lbs.

It is often hard to find such torque specs for specific vehicles.

For bolts that you cannot find a specified torque spec, you can refer to a standard bolt torque chart. The charts are based on the diameter of the bolt threads not the wrench size used to fit the bolt head. The charts also depend on the hardness of the bolt material. Also keep in mind the material you are bolting into.

Keep in mind that thermostat housing bolts are just sealing a gasket. They are not holding the entire car together.

After turning wrenches for many years, most mechanics just know by feel.

There are cases where a torque wrench is mandatory. Like head bolts, wheel bearing/hub nuts, rod caps, main bearing, etc.

Hello, different size, grade, thread size, application will always have something to do the torque specification of bots, nuts, plug etc.


Remember, to get the proper torque specification on bolts, nuts and threaded holes. If these have been used on an engine and it being repaired/overhauled. To get the proper torque spec these items will be need to cleaned inside and out, threads on bolts need to be straightened, and the same for nuts and bolt holes in the engine block, head, timing cover----all bolts, nuts, threaded casting holes all need to be rework to presence condition... Almost new in shape. Now, once this is done you can get the proper torque requirement and to get these spec. all bolts, nuts, threaded holes need to be oiled first. They the torque can be set properly as to the manufactures specifications. Also, there are not set standards for torquing head bolts on a 265 cu/in Chevy and compared to a Ford 265 cu/in engine, they will be totally different.



If you don't the torque spec. go to your local library they have many American Auto Maintenance Manual that will give the all the information that you need. So, just remember all bolts, nuts, machined holes with thread need to cleaned and resized the threads. To torque any bolt will need to oiled--not much.... Need torque spec on back 3 bolts of hub assembly on 2003 silverado 5.3 v8.


I belive that your talking about the bolts that sucure the hub to the knuckle . 50 TO 60 FT LBS is good its not a super critial spec unless for some other reason they are comeing loose witch wouldn't have anything to do with the torque spec anyway . Torque is determined by the diamater and tread pitch as well the grade of the bolt so a grade 8 bolt is much harder and stronger then a grade 2 bolt and the thread pitch is lower on harder bolts so they have more threads per inch . You can also tell by looking at the head of the bolt the more lines you see the harder the steel the bolt is made out of is So like i said its not super crictial and if there lock washers make sure you but them back ware they came from
