You will find the spark plug gap and timing specifications listed on the vehicles emission label under the hood, and those specifications are the ones to be used on that vehicle and engine for that year, and no other specifications should ever take precedence over the specifications listed on the vehicles emission control label. Here is the firing order diagram for that engine, let me know if you require any further assistance, and I an curious as to how you got taken for $2,000.

This could be a "knotty" one.
I think, if I were you, I'd take numerous digital pictures of what you now have and then visit a salvage yard.
Find a truck like yours, and, as you disassemble the dash for removal, check against the pictures you have taken to try and identify anything that may be missing.

Drop the steering column down to it's lowest position. Pull up on the panel you mentioned in your question and it should snap off. The screws you need to remove should be revealed. The cluster should then slide out. Pretty quick and easy.
