Front wheel drive cars have a couple of bars attaching the shifter to the transmission, one to stabilize the shifter and another to actually manipulate the gear selector on the transmission. if the stabilizer bar (torque bar) came off or loosened, the shifter would have a very difficult time changing gears and would probably require 2 hands to do it, you might only be to get into 3rd and 4th since they are in the neutral gate

90 nissan sentra 5spd manual wont go into any gear with or without running or clutch engaged. why?

The clutch isn't working correctly if you have to go through all that to get it into gear. You can check the shifter rails on top of the transmission, but that takes removal and dis assembly of the top cover on the transmission.

Car starts no problem, goes into gear easily but when I let the clutch out on my 95 avenger 2.0L it does not engage. So I could leaving it running in gear and nothing happens. Need some help guys

You need to determine if the clutch is engaged or not.If it is,then the clutch needs replacing, had it been slipping, before? if so this is more than likely the problem,if not then ,possible the shifter is not engaging the forks in the transmission. You would have to remove the shifter from the transmission to see if that is the case.

I own a 2004 Silverado 2500HD, 6.0L, 4X4, manual transmission. After hauling a very heavy load of gravel (almost 2 tons), I attempt to engage manual shifter, and shifter won't go into gear; clutch...

Sounds like the pressure plate for the clutch is bad. However, I would mark where the adjustment is now so you can reset it to that position if the clutch adjustment does not fix the problem. I would then try to adjust the clutch and if no good replace the clutch, pressure plate and pilot bearing in the crank and then adjust the new clutch.

Not sure if shifter is installed properly

Ok, I guess its going to be a not too obvious solution then. All we have to do is find it...
1.What type of gear shifter is in your truck. Column or tower
2. Is the tail shaft turning when you try to move the vehicle
3. Does the vehicle try to move at all
4. Is there any noise from the gearbox or clutch area
5. Are you certain the clutch kit was the right one
6. Did you try the clutch plate on the gearbox input shaft spline
7. Is the release bearing clear of the pressure plate fingers.
8. Does the release bearing carrier slide freely on the retainer on the front of the bearbox, and did you apply lubricant here.

Backup lights do not work...1987 325ic...new bulbs installed, all other lights work perfectly...in reverse, with lights on, backup lights do not come on. Where is the backup light switch? There is a set...

it depends if it is auto or manual. There is a nuetral saftey switch on the auto-located on the manual valve arm(the piece that the linkage from the shifter connects to at the trans.) On the manual trans. there will be a 2 pole switch on the top shift plate that is for reverse only. The starting(clutch engagement switch)is located at the clutch pedal-2 seperate switches. First check for power at the back up light bulb connecter with reverse engaged(may have power at all times when key is on). Then check for ground when reverse is engaged-from bulb connecter to ground) with reverse engaged. The switch will just provide the ground when reverse is engaged. The power comes from an alternate source. Most likley a switch issue but at least this way you can be sure.

Manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.

1998 Dodge dakota 4 cyl. manual trans.

You may want to try adjusting the clutch. I think Dodge have adjustment options. it seems that the throw out bearing is too close to the clutch and does not "throw out' as it should.

After new clutch installed, shifter will not engage 2nd, 4th, or reverse. It will engage 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears fine though. how can I adjust this?

Your shifter cables have gona bad, i had the same problem and its not your clutch thats causing the problem. Your shifter cables are just worn out and you need to replace them
