Check behind the dash to see if the speedometer drive cable was reattached. (mechanical, not electronic drive)

Testimonial: "the speedometer is still attached via the cable"

Next check is to remove the cable from the speedometer and try to draw out the center cable (square ended). If it comes out with a frayed end, the cable has twisted in half (the other end must be disconnected at the transmission and the inner cable pulled out. The inner cable is replaceable as an aftermarket device--see your auto parts supplier. Before going to the trouble of feeding the replacement into the housing, make sure that the speedometer fitting will turn freely--a small screwdriver or the old cable inserted and twisted CCW (looking at the rear of the speedometer) will drive the needle upwards in proportion to the speed of turning. If it wont turn, the bearing in the speedometer has frozen--try some penetrating oil where the fitting enters the body of the meter. If that is ineffective, the speedometer needs to be replaced (wrecking yard?)

if you can get under the dash with your hand you may be able to pull the vent pipe away but you may have to remove a few components to gain access or try one of those grab tools that have a claw on the end

I have a 1987 f150 and the speedometer doesnt work? Whats is wrong with it? Neither does the radio. But the gas gauge works.

your speedometer is mechanical, so the radio is a different problem. You need a new speedometer cable.

Speedometer Cable replacement

A universal kit will work for your application. Most of the time the center cable is what is damaged.

1. Remove speedometer cable from transmission
2. Remove speedo gear retainer and remove speedo gear.
3. Pull out cable from sheath - If broken you will only get part of it
4. Remove instrument panel and pull out section of cable still trapped in cable sheath if applicable.

For re install follow directions on package.

Pointers

1. Cable appears un-damaged: Check to make sure the speedo gear is not damaged where the cable enters it. Then also check the back of the speedo head cable hole for damage.
2. You can measure you two broken pieces to arrive at an appropriate length for ordering purposes.
3. Make sure this is well lubricated on install otherwise the speedo can jump up and down or damage the new cable.

Lights in the dashboard

Check operation & wiring at light control rheostat (left side of dash) & If everything else with electrical is OK, sounds like the bulbs may have simply blown. You will have to pull out instrument cluster to get at the bulbs.
