My 2003 Beetle gts turbo, has started making sound that is like a jet engine. It is intermittent, and seems to be until it warms up. Any ideas on what this could be?

you could have a clamp or hose that has cracked or come off you can try to pressurize the turbocharger from the intake side of the turbo and try and listen for the leak to find it

1998 Impreza 2.0 non turbo wont idle properly

Lots of things it could be. Egr valve sticking, a hose that came off, a bad sensor for airflow, or even throttle position sensor.

Intermittent nature seems to point to something sticky or loose.

Have a 2001 beetle 1.8 turbo. Lately at low speed

I have been having a similar problem (2001 1.8-TDI Beetle). The rattling sounds almost like wind buffeting the car/whistling, and increases in intensity as each gear revs higher (it gets quieter after a shift, and then builds again). at its loudest (before a shift), there's an additional rattle similar to tin cans in a paper bag being shaken (it's faint, but it's there). I just had the oil changed and the car looked over... not sure what could be the problem, but would like to have even a vague idea before I take it in. Any thoughts? Thanks!

2002 VW Beetle turbo

Ok we figured something out. The turbo model has a rear retractable spoiler that flips up when you go above 45 mph and down when you go below 10. The later models just have a fixed spoiler. Still looking into if it should make that loud 'ratchety' sound.
