Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Occasionally, my 1998 GMC will lose all power and cut off. This usually happens as I accelerate and even once in traffic. When I try to restart, I turn the key and there is no response. After fiddling with the light switch, radio knobs, etc., it restarts. I recently had a lot of engine work done, including filter replacements, thinking that was problem, but problem persists. Yesterday, while pulling out of a parking space, the truck simply died. After checking battery cables, which were tightly connected, I was able to restart the truck. Any idea as to what may be causing the periodic shut downs?

Check all of your grounds. They are the key for the electronics in your truck. Engine grounds, body grounds, etc. Does power go out altogether or just dies with the power just won't start?

It might be a bad computer. Or someone has altered the governor setting on the car. the governor usually cuts acceleration; Most times even power to a vehicle

Sounds like you may have fuel filter problem. you may want to check the pump and filters located in or near the fuel tank.
Go directly to the source ( Fuel Tank, Pump, Filters, Fuel Pressure Regulator and Injectors )
You may have water or grit in the fuel
Hope this helps

Hi guys, obviously this could be any number of problems, but the most common ones to cause this is a dirty throttle intake housing, usually a good clean up rectifys this, also check the small vacum hoses for any splits or perishing as this also can cause this problem, hope this helps you's out,Bill.
