Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Occasionally, when accelerating, my 1998 Sierra loses all power and shuts off. When I try to restart, there is no response; it is completely dead. After a while, and after fiddling with light switches, power is restored and the truck starts. I recently had a lot of work done on the engine, replacing filters, thinking that was the problem. But the problem persists. What could be the cause?

Have you tried asking that question to your engine control computer? If not, that would be a really good place to start.

Sputtering when accelerating

If it idles ok and only "sputters" under load it could be either an ignition or fuel problem. How long has it been since the fuel filter was changed? How about spark plugs and wires? Without the proper diagnostic equipment and the vehicle in front of me, these are the easiest things for the DIYer to tackle with the fuel filter being the cheapest option.
