Sounds like the head gasket or even the intake manifold gasket has failed. both repairs require signifcant down time and to be repared by a competant repair facility as ther could be hidden or deeper damge when items are removed for replacement.

Have a 2001 Volvo s40. it was low on oil and check engine light began flashing. when I stopped the car, the oil was very very low. begin to see puffs of white smoke. After checking oil and adding 3 qts....

Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

I have a 2001 S40 thats got a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. any suggestions as to what could be causing that?

Only three things can cause that. 1. excessive amount of fuel entering the combustion chambers. 2.oil entering the combustion chamber. 3. Coolant entering the combustion chamber (coolant steam dissipates faster than oil related smoke and can also be accompanied by dripping liquid from pipe). There are numerous reasons that can happen, all of which can be tested. Fuel problems are generally related to the engine management system in which case code testing is required with follow-up individual component tests. Oil and coolant problems can be checked by doing cylinder compression, cylinder leakdown tests and cooling system pressure tests.

2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white smoke and turbo not kicking in. I have a new head, timing belt waterpump, oxygen sens. valve job, cam pulley all changed. It is still smoking and no turbo....

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

Oil in the turbo, smoking bad!

check to make sure the turbo oil return pipe is not clogged. if it is pressure will build up causing oil leak through seal causing it to smoke.

2001 s40 volvo diesel .. turbo oil leak ??

Could be the Turbo oil return pipe seal, its a cheap about $10 but you need to get to the pipe.
Its just a bit tricky to reach and you will need the gasket to go on the other end of the pipe when you take it off.
Its a well know fault check the Volvo Forums web site.

VOLVO S40 2001 HEADLIGHT WIPER MOTORS

Behind Headlamp remove wiring clip and tape it off. At the same time tie off the water pipe. That'll do the job quickly. Otherwise removing the whole wiper system isn't a big job.
