Question about Cadillac Catera
Depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle it could be a cable on the back of the dashboard, a broken cable or a sensor malfunction or even an ECM problem. I had a 1997 Dodge shadow that did this and it was the cable on the back of the dash board that operated the speedometer, yet in 2000 and new vehicles the system is electronic there are several sensors send data to the ECM. One of these is located in the transmission. I would get the Haynes manual for your vehicle from the local autoparts store and follow the instructions for diagnosing the problem.
