You may have a faulty fuel sending unit and the bad news is, that unit is in the fuel tank. GM has had a problem with these units and many times this has been the fix. Go to Walmart and buy 2 or 3 bottles of Techron. It is an additive for your fuel tank. It has cleaning agents that help remove the sulpher deposits which were corroding some of the fuel sending units in the tank. Run a few tankfulls of this thru your SUV. If your Equinox is out of warranty I would try this before anything.

How do I correct erratic fuel gauge problem on 2007 Saturn Vue Red line 3.50ci, gauge goes from full to empty and engine light comes on, light goes off and gauge returns to normal. Am trying to correc

there is usually a resistor built into the actual guage that smooths out the signals from the fuel sender unit , not sure if you will be able to repair to this level , time and money might be better spent on a new gauge

Speedo needle doesn't move, petrol gauge moves up and down, low fuel light comes on and off, rev needle and temp work. Rear fog lights light comes on dash when evan side lights switched on

Probably a break inside wiring loom of one/more of the three wires that eventually connect to the speed sensor on top of gearbox. The break I fixed in my 2003 Leon 1.6SX was in the loom under battery tray. My symptoms were no speedo working, and erratic fuel guage (particulary when under 1/2 full). I repaired one broken wire.

Gas gauge goes up and down when I get out of car when i am sitting in car the gauge reads full even though it is not full then on hills and just sitting at a stop light it goes to empty for no reason

You most likely have a failing fuel level sending unit which is located inside the fuel tank. The sender wears a bit as the float arm moves up and down with normal fuel level variations and this wear can result in a guage that reads erratically. Many of the fuel level senders are now only sold as a part of the fuel pump module so if it turns out that it is indeed the sender you may have to replace the entire pump module. Hope this helps!

Gas gauge is stuck at the full position - sometimes moves erratically 2002 Buick Regal

This may mean there is corrosion on the wires of the in tank sensor, or the float arm is sticking. If you pull the sensor out of the tank and move it through its stroke a few times it may get better, I t may need a new sensor, if you ground the wire at the tank the gauge should move to check it.
I have known some car gauges to come good just by using a fuel addidive, which cleans up the corrosion in the tank sensor.

Getting wrong fuel gauge readings. What could be the problem

Most likely your problem is the fuel pump sending unit.. which is located on the fuel pump..If the float gets stuck, or moves erratic, the gauge will do the same....

1999 Silverado erratic fuel gauge

The current to the sender can't be allowed to be DC because it could spark and blow up.
So they use a ******** or oscillator to turn it into AC. That could be the problem. It is usually mounted near the gauge.

Fuel gauge on 1993 Dodge Dakota V8

Definitely the gauge can be changed, provided the float in the fuel tank is OK, i.e. no leaks. This float connects to a potentiometer which records the current flowing thru it and displays it in the gauge. So before replacing the gauge measure the current and match that against the quantity of fuel in the tank...............sodeep
