The shift cables are a problem on these, make sure that both ends, under the hood an dinside under the shifter is good. the ends have bushings that can break. if any ends are bad, you will need to replace both cables from the dealer.its a job and unless you are familiar with it, you may need a shop to replace them.

Why wont my transmission shift out of 1

Hi Mike,

It sounds like it could be a problem with the "linkage" Linkage is the term used to describe the mechanical connection (rods, elbows, swivels, etc.) that are between the gear shift and the transmission itself.

If bent, loose, jammed, etc. you'll have troubles not unlike those you're describing. If you cant get it to shift in the direction you want go - you'll have to have it towed to the repair shop of choice.

If found to be the problem - it shouldn't be an repair really - so good luck!

Why do my 1994 dodge ram 1500 automatic does not shift into second and third

check the fluid level
check those with engine warm, idling and gear selector in neutral
check the Throttle Pressure Cable (it is attached to the throttle body and goes down to the trans) - open the throttle body manually all the way (Wide Open Throtle) the TP cable should have all the slack taken up. From your symptoms I would expect to see the cable end disconnected from the throttle body. The plastic end that clips to the throttle body gets crispy and breaks. I have in the past used a couple tiny plastic ty raps to hold it in place on the linkage. If you choose to do that temporary repair - Please carefully inspect the throttle body to make sure the repair doesn't cause the throttle body to bind and not work smoothly. Done improperly the throttle body can stick and you will have a serious problem if that happens.

My 93 dodge Dakota runs up to 4000 rpms before it shifts but it still idles really high after that. its a v6 3.9L automatic. I think its the shift linkage but I don't know how to adjust it. ive...

If it goes into gear correctly it's not the linkage. I.e drive reverse etc. I would suspect a pressure issue in the trans for the high shift rpm. Possibly low pump pressure or a valve body issue. The high idle could be a result of this or possibly a sticking cable if it has cruise. Possible vacuum issue also.

Cannot get the car out of park sometimes. Just jams and makes a grinding noise when I do get it shifted.

Auto trans work in Park by a pawl and toothed ring on the output shaft of the gearbox. If the trans has been put into "Park" while the vehicle is in motion there will be the inevitable miss match of pawl/ring resulting in damage to both. If the pawl is twisted/bent it could result in problems with release. A '97 is pretty old so its quite likely. Get down to your local trans specialist, get it up on the lift and see what can be done from underneath. Some trans only need the tailhousing removed to get at the park brake ring etc. At the end of the day its not a "Brake" as in stoppng the vehicle from motion but a holding device to lock the transmission. Always use the braking system to halt and hold the vehicle before selecting "Park"

THE GEAR LINKAGE WILL HAVE JUMPED OUT OF ALIGNMENT, ITS A 10mm af spanner to fix it you should see where it was originally placed by the marks on the selector rod linkage.it needs two person job one under the car with the spanner and one positioning the gear lever.

that sounds like a linkage issue, check under at bell housing, if not its the band you need to rebuild the trans.

SOUNDS LIKE THE DOWNSHIFT LINKAGE IS STICKING/SEIZED..IT IS LINKAGE THAT CONNECTS TO LEVER ON TRANS FROM FROM THROTTLE LINKAGE..THE SHAFT THE LEVER IS MOUNTED TO SEIZES IN SHIFTER SHAFT OF TRANS..SOMETIMES YOU CAN FREE UP IT UP BY SPRAYING WITH A PENETRATING FLUID AND WORKING LINKAGE BACK AND FORTH,SOMETIMES VALVE BODY HAS TO COME OUT TRANS TO FREE IT UP PROPERLY..I HOPE THIS HELPS

Shifter won't shift gears

Have someone look @ linkage on trans. while someone moves shift lever thru the gears. If lever @ trans doesn't move then its in the linkage between the column and trans. (possible clip or pin broken @ linkage jounts). If lever @ trans moves then its a trans. internal prob.

98 chevy cheyene 1500 automatic -hard to shift-

Loosen the bolt thats on the trans that holds the linkage on..Some one may have tightened it to much..Or grab a hold of it and see if it is sloppy and moves around..If so its loose inside trans..Another possible cause the linkage from column to trans may be binding up when trying to shift..Hope this helps you and Have A Great Night
