You will need a serpentine belt tool to do the job properly. You attach it the the belt tensioner, and pull it to loosen up the belt.

SOURCE: how to replace a serpentine belt on a 2004

  1. Lift the car so you can work from underneath when needed.
  2. Disconnect the battery . Just to be safe.
  3. Take the serpentine belt off.
  4. Remove the alternator.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor. (You can do it without removing, but it's a royal PITA... LOL) Don't unhook the lines, just unbolt and move out of the way.
  6. Remove the worn tensioner from t he block. (You need to unbolt the pulley first to get to all the tensioner bolts)

SOURCE: How do I loosen the tensioner to replace the

First, note how the drive belt is routed, then use a wrench on the tensioner pulley center bolt and turn the tensioner clockwise (four cylinder engine) or counterclockwise (six cylinder engine) to release the drive belt tension. Remove the drive belt from the tensioner and relax the tensioner. Fit the new belt on the other pulleys, then turn the tensioner again and fit the new belt over the tensioner.

The picture is from a different model, but it is similar to what you are working with.

SOURCE: Cold engine knock after timing belt and water pump replaced

Hi, this could be because the cam timing is a notch or 2 out. The fact that it quiets down when the engine heats up is because the timing is retarded as the engine reaches operating temperature. You will have to look at the cam timing and make sure that they have done it correctly. If that is fine it might be that they have dropped something, like a bolt or nut into the valve cover when it was removed.

Turn all the pulleys by hand. Chances are you will be able to tell if there are bad bearings in cone of the following: Power steering pump, alternator, idler pulley, A/C compressor. The one that is failing will probably feel rough when you turn it or have a lot of play in it.
