If you check voltage at battery posts with car running - voltage should be 13.6 - if low turn off sound system - see if voltage comes up - or start with nothing on and turn 1 device on at a time - watch voltage drop- this will tell you where the power drain is coming from

Would an alternator make your car will not start

If your battery is fully charged, the car can start and run from the battery with no alternator at all. It might run 1/2 hr with no alternator.

A good test for the alternator is to start the car and then unhook one of the battery terminals. If the alternator is good, the car will keep on running without the battery. If the car turns off hen you disconnect a terminal, then the alternator isn't working.

But a bad alternator won't stop your car from starting...it will just not keep your battery charged or keep the motor running once the battery gets less than 12V

2003 vectra 3.2 litre v6 not starting thought battery was flat as not driven for some time jump started it and drove fine.next day same thing had to jump start only drove for 5 min or so then the day after...

you need to check the alternator charge rate as this is the sort of problems associated with a low charge rate , unfourtunately you will need the engine running to do this so get a voltmeter ready for when you jump start the engine and read across battery terminals if reads below 13 volts the alternator needs replacing ,check that the drive belt is tensioned correctly as this would make alternator give low charge, also will need the OBD codes reading after all this going on , the engine doesnt need to be running for this just ignition on ,will give codes for sensor/switch which might be out because of the starting/running problems

New battery keeps going dead no low voltage light

Have the vehicle taken to one of many places that will test the Alternator output etc--narrow it down first without replacing that.

Voltage may drop enough to prevent starting without triggering the low voltage issue.

Doge neon keeps diying

It can be your alternator. Did you know that when the car is running, the alternator is meant to be the sole source of electricity to run everything? The battery is only there to initially power up the car and crank it over. Once started, the alternator takes over supplying power to run the car.and charge up the battery .But if the alternator is not working, the battery supplies the power till it runs out of sufficient voltage, and the car will die.
Does your alternator/battery light go off as it should, after engine is running? If not, you have a charging malfunction and need to test the alternator If the alternator is good and is charging the battery back up every time it runs, then you have an ignition problem, not a battery or alternator problem.
Good luck, and hope you find the problem.

Battery keeps running down on 96 cadillac elderado

if battery keeps running down. check the voltage across the batery posts while car is off.should be around 12.5 to13 volts. then with tester hooked up to battery, start the car. if alternator is ok, it while read about 14 volts give or take a few volts. if the gharging is low its a bad alternator or the drive belt.

What happens when battery light keeps coming on 2003chev trailblazer

Voltage low usually alternator/regulator not working and battery is discharging. Put voltmeter on battery when running should be 13 to 14.8 volt if not replace alternator and 13 is low should be about 13.8. A fully charged battery is 12.6 not 12.5or lower

The car won't start let alone keep running. The battery light was on for awhile but the car was running fine. Then I was driving and it just started sputtering and died and even when I jump it it only...

Get the battery & the alternator checked (Autozone, O'reilly's or even Pep Boys can do that for free). If the alternator is out or going out, it's not charging your battery - that means everything electrical in your car is now trying to run directly off the battery & draining it (it doesn't take long - especially if the lights or A/C is on). If those check out ok, take it into a mechanic & have them run a diagnostic - you may have a relay out. Good Luck.

1995 dodge stratus keeps going dead in driveway. I jump it off and let it run 15 mins to charge battery up. Turn off and crank right up, but the next day it is dead again.

With engine running used a voltmeter and check voltage at battery, you will be checking alternator out put voltage, should have a reading of no less then 13.0 volts, if less bad alternator, the reason it keeps going dead is that the car is using the battery to run it .till the battery has no more power, then you jump it and the battery is charge up again and will run again till it goes dead again.

Battery light comes on and off car dies with a quick boost it run again then dies battery good

this is caused by a failing alternator. Kragen auto and Autozone tests these for free.

'06 Sedona battery light comes on. Low voltage indicated on radar detector. Battery was replaced ...2 days later the same problem. When battery was replaced, I unhooked batt connectors and van still...

It can still be the alternator, the alternator can produce enough to keep the car running, but it may not have enough to keep the battery charged 13-14 volts. It don't take long for a new battery to drain if the alternator isn't putting out the right voltage. Find a voltmeter and check the output from the alternator to see what voltage is being produced. If it's not at least 12.5 -14 then have the alternator checked out.
