Engine is running fine. Oil level is good. Oil light comes on and off at random. Engine isn't knocking and runs great. Recently changed to GTX extended milage oil. Problem developed

The oil light comes on when the oil pressure sensor detects low oil pressure. The amount of oil has little to with it, although very low oil levels can cause loss of oil pressure. Since you aren't getting knocking, chances are the oil pressure sensor is defective. Replace it and monitor the situation closely. This could be a serious condition if allowed to escalated and it turns out to be an oil pressure issue.

The oil sending unit is should be in the engine close to the oil pump. Mine was on driver side above oil pan. The light could stay on for several reasons. Faulty sending unit, low oil pressure, low oil, oil pump going bad. The light means low oil pressure reading what is causing the reading is one of the things in previous sentence

Oil leak

Hi,
I'm not a mech and not familiar w/the Contour, but it's likely the oil pump or the oil sending unit/sensor. Also, could be the camshaft or crankshaft seals.

Autozone has online repair manuals for reference.

The oil pressure keeps going down and sets off the check guages light . This happens when i stop or slow down.

In this situation either you have low oil pressure or the oil pressure sending unit is faulty. I typically remove the oil pressure sensing unit and install a mechanical pressure gauge to verify actual oil pressure. If that checks out good then I replace the sensor. Oil in the connector for the sending unit is a good indicator that it is faulty.
