Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

My 1994 Grand Prix sedan wont downshift properly and stays in 3rd

From a dead start it will be in normal gear, and when I accelorate it almost redlines or I have to take my foot off the gas so it shifts and so I dont redline. After it shifts into 2nd then 3rd it will not shift into 4th or 1st. So when I come to a red light I have to shift it into 2nd on the column shifter so when traffic starts going I can atleast somewhat stay with them until 3rd gear comes then I can go with traffic. Got onto the highway to see if it will shift into 4th and it will just redline in 3rd when its really supposed to be shifting into 4th. My grandma gave me this car and I'm trying to keep it for a couple of decades since I already put over 4,000$ into it.

I'd bring it to a trans shop and have it diagnosed. Sounds like a very confused shift module or valve body problem...don't keep driving it or if it's not too serious, it will turn into a big problem.

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

Transmission downshift problem

This vehicle had a problem with the valve bodies in the transmission. There are several servos that assist the transmission to shift. This problem is best diagnosed by a local trans shop that can do an OBDII test to see if the trans has the proper voltages to the servos as well as to check the pressure.

1994 gp 3100 ,wont start, turn key getting all the dash lites but starter not engaging, security lite is flashing, the car was drove to my hse i know it runs any ideas, battery is new, key is a #7.with key...

You need to set the parking brake, Turn the key on let it sit like that for 10 mins. the sec light will either start flashing or will stay on or go off when done (This will reset)
REPEAT 3 times!
Then you should be able to start the car after the 3rd time!

Your transmission is "downshifting" which is a normal function...However if it's happening early, the throttle cable may be out of adjustment. This does not happen in 3rd gear because that's how the system is designed. Downshifting is a 4 (od) to 3rd gear shift...if already in 3rd, this won't happen. As long as trans shifts normally on flat ground with no slipping or delayed shifts, just service it regularly and it should be fine.
