Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country

2 Answers

Hi all. My '97 jeep cherokee sport wont turn over and makes a sound like a car with popped timing belt. The day before it overheated and the oil pressure gauge began fluctuating(which it never does). Fluids did not help the next morning. Also makes a popping sound when I press gas while trying to roll it over. Please help. Also. Does this car have a timing belt or chain? and if so, where? I amusually good at working on it but this one has got me.

An engine with a failed belt or chain generally just spins much faster than normal when cranking.
Since your engine overheated, I'd check the wires, cap and rotor to make sure all are dry. If coolant got inside the cap, it will cause cross-fire and no-start. I know of no jeep engine that uses a timing belt, even though you failed to mention which engine you have, I am sure you have a chain.(located under the front engine cover) If the engine was severely overheated it is possible to cause internal engine damage or you may have a blown head gasket...you need to determine the cause of the overheat and correct it. Your engine oil should be changed as well as auto trans oil if overheat was severe. There is an outside chance that you ran the engine out of oil. Lack of lubrication internally would give you gauge fluctuation and can also result in excessive temp from friction. BUT if that is the case, you should have heard some noise in the engine. If that has happened, your engine is not worth saving. Check items I mentioned. Hopefully it is something simple like a wet cap. Need any further help with this, just ask!!

Hi Angela. it sounds like you have a belt proble causing your alternator to not charge your battery AND your water pump and fan to not cool properly. Inspect your belts first. If you have more questions please ask me!

'99 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Clicking/popping when I turn the wheel to the left, such as pulling into a parking space or making a u-turn. Started a few days ago and has gotten worse very quickly.

sounds like your cv joint is bad . Have it replaced sooner rather than later as when it fails, you'll be stuck somewhere and will need a tow.

1997 cherokee sport all of the sudden sounds like a deisel. very loud. has oil, has anti-freeze, has trans, what could cause this?

The most obvious cause would be overheating, followed by low oil pressure. If it sounds like a diesel as soon as you start it up, it's most likely oil pressure, if it takes a while before it starts to make noise that would be overheating. Both can cause serious damage to your engine so get it to a shop and get these things checked right away. Hope this helps.

Serpentine belt wont stop slipping

sounds like your belt tensioner pulley may be defective, also check all the pulleys for excessive play in the pulley bearings, these are the most common causes.

Timing belt and pulley

1.Your engine has an internal timing chain, not a belt.
Therefore I'm going to assume that you mean the serpentine drive belt.
Common causes for belt to fail is either a mis-aligned or damaged pulley, improper belt tension, or bad tensioner spring (if equipped with spring loaded tensioner) You mentioned a loose pulley but didn't say which one! That's what I'd look at first! Also, make sure that all pulleys have no "wobble" indicating a bad pulley bearing Most common: water pump or idler pulley.
