Unidentified Bolt needs Replacement 01' caravan

On my 01' Caravan Theres a bolt I need to replace and I cannot identify. I went the dealership and they cannot identify it either. The bolt is above the control arm. My Mechanic says it is an upper control arm mount bolt. It is long and goes right up into the Chassis. It has a hex head and a washer and between the bolts head and the chassis is a rubber bushing. This bolt is located on the passenger side of the van. Anyone have any idea what the hell it is? I could snap a pic or try to draw a picture. Thanks

the dealership tells me there is no such thing as an upper control arm bolt. I have no clue what it is. All I know is I need it replaced.

Its a long bolt with a large head on it. It has a washer and then a big squared rubber bushing. then goes through the chassis and up. The bolt is about 8-10inches long from what I can see. It goes up through the frame and my mechanic actual cut a piece of the body out to tighten the nut at the other end. This bolt is located on the passenger side behind the strut but above the rack and pinion. It is also above the control arm. If you take the tire off and look into the wheel well along the top, it is one of the last things you see along the edge before the solid wall of the chassis. I have no clue what this bolt is. The dealership for some reason cannot identify it yet either. My mechanic says it is an upper control arm bolt and the dealership says that doesnt exsist. the bolt goes straight up into the chassis in the 12 o clock position. Anyone have any clue what this is? What it is called? anything? It is stripped and it is popping and causing a lot of damage to my passenger side.

Could be upper control arm bolt but also could be body mount bolt where the body mounts to the chassis

  • Anonymous Sep 17, 2009

well I guess they would know Have you checked under the van for other bolts like it. I'm almost positive it's a body mount bolt Is the rubber bushing between the bottom of the body and the frame? if so it the body mount bolt.

Does the crankshaft pulley on a 1999 dodge grand caravan SE 3.3 engine have a bolt ?

Sounds to me like they broke it or the replacement motor company did! Not an easy job due to lack of space.

01 Kia Sephia bolt sizes and location?

You would need a parts diagram for that specific vehicle to identify each bolt, generally you need a dealership parts catalogue.

It seems overwhelming but it's just a small puzzle. We used to call this a "basket" case.

You are going to need a specific amount of bolts that are the same for each group. Separate the bolts you have into piles of similar lengths and sizes.

Of course you will need to try each bolt hole by hand to prevent installing the wrong threads as well as making sure the bolts you use are the correct length. By determining the length and size you should narrow you hunt down. FOR EXAMPLE: you will need 3 here of the same size and length, 5 there that are long and 2 short, 4 there, etc., Just like you identified the long mount bolt. You can also identify where bolt heads were installed by size and the imprint left from where they were removed.

It's not really that difficult since the bolts are always different lengths and sizes, just don't put a long bolt into a short hole. (measure with a small screwdriver to get the length and make sure your bolt is never longer than the room available and the threads fit.)

Good luck!

I need to replace the belt tensioner on a 2000 Chysler Caravan with a 3.0L engine, with a/c. I would appreciation a diagram for properly installing the serpentine belt, and some instructions on how to...

Hi, I have pasted the procedure for belt replacement below. To replace the tensioner as well, first take the belt off. Then remove the pulley from the tensioner. This will expose the single bolt that holds the tensioner on. Replace the tensioner and then the pulley (if replacing all). Then reinstall the belt.

Alternator/Power Steering Pump Belt
The alternator/power steering pump belt is provided with a dynamic tensioner to maintain proper belt tension.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands.
  3. Remove the right front splash shield.
  4. Release tension by rotating the tensioner clockwise (use a box-end wrench on the tensioner bolt shown in the picture.
  5. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  6. Proper belt tension is maintain by the dynamic tension.
  7. Install the right front splash shield. Lower the front of the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

How do i put a harmonic balance on a 1997 dodge caravan 3.0 engine

first step is to remove the serpintine belt remember which way it comes off or sometimes theres a sticker under hood that tells u the belt routing. next jack up passengerside of vehicle remove the tire inside the wheel well theres some plastic that wil have to be removed some cases its already gone if so u will be able to see the harmonic balancer its the very bottom pulley with about a 15/16 bolt in the center of the pulley. remove it note that bolt is torqued very tight the best way is to have access to an impact gun. once bolt is removed u will need a harmonic balancer puller . not if ur worried on how it goes back together theres is on 1 way that it goes back on the pulley will have a notch on it and the crank shaft with a half moon key way. install in revers order.

Belt Tensioner replacement

A simple bolt on assembly, the tensioner for the serpentine belt may need replacement if it fails to smoothly pivot and maintain tension on the belt.

Using a half inch breaker bar, release tension by rotating against the spring, remove the belt from the tensioner. Unbolt the tensioner (one bolt may be so diffucult to reach that you might want to use a racheting open end wrench by Alden.
Install the new tensioner by reversing these steps.
I usually replace the belt at the same time.
