1997 GMC SIERRA SHIFTING PROBLEM

1997 GMC Sierra . when trying to put into gear, the colum shift just slides over like it's not catching on anything. someone told me it sounds like the shifting cable broke. easy fix? costs? can we do it or does it need to go to a mechanic shop? any advice will help greatly. thank you.

Fairly easy fix if it is cable. Most cables dealer item (good luck) but usally less than a hundred.
