I assume you are trying to set up the distributor? 1-3-4-2, be sure to set the cylinder 1 to Top dead Center when the shaft of the distributor is aligned in its housing

it could be a partially plugged catalytic converter. The catalyst stops working over time and can become plugged resulting in loss of power and is consistent with age of vehicle. Something to check
you can try a bigger fuse and if it still blows it then you have a short in one of the wires. i then you will have to hunt down the short that can take awhile.
