Go to the bottom of the radiator locate the biggest hose , follow it back to the engine block and look for a domed shape cover with two or three bolts in it , the stat is underneath that

There is an engine thermostat in every car`s cooling systems . The thermostat may have failed in the closed position stopping the coolant from circulating and resulting in an overheated engine .
The thermostat is priced at roughly $10.00 at any automotive parts store . Find a friend or neighbor to help you locate the one on your car and start there with checking this item . It is a very common cause of engine overheating. Don`t forget to get a new gasket too for the thermostat housing . Good luck ! !
I'm not really familiar with JEEP mechanics but if you've replaced your water pump and it's still overheating with full water/coolant level, you should check the thermostat; when it fails, it's a common cause or overheating in all kind of cars

Hello Martin, I have seen someone install a thermostat upside down . This causes the thermostat to not open . Was the engine overheating before you replaced the water pump and thermostat ? If the engine has been excessively overheated, this could cause a blown head gasket .
Most problems if not leaking is with thermostat valve. Find in system the thermostat valve. You can trobelshoot itself. Remove the valve from its assy an close it back. chek that is correctly closed. Dryve some miles and check the themperatur. if its ok than is problem with thermostat. If problem is not gone and car is overheating check that in system is not any air.
I would replace the thermostat. Its a cheap fix and most likely the issue. If you replace the thermostat and are still overheating then you may have a more serious issue. But going 3 miles and overheating sound like the thermostat is not opening up at operating temperature.
It sounds like your thermostat has gone bad and sticking close, Replace the Thermostat and Antifreeze. When replacing the thermostat, buy a fail safe thermostat so you will not have a overheating problem when the thermostat fails. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help.
there is a coolant cap on the overflow bottle check it for seal i'd just replace it also if you put the new thermostat in backward the overheating would be significant
