SOUND LIKE GLOW PLUGS NOT WORKING DUE TO FAULTY FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR BLOWED GLOW PLUG FUSE OR BAD RELAY.HAVE VECHICLE CODE SCANNED TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE PRE HEATING SYSTEM WORKING CORRECTLY.CODE SCANNING WILL GIVE YOU A FAULT CODE IF YOU HAVE BAD GLOW PLUG RELAY.
I would try changing your fuel filter. Inspect the fuel lines for leaks. Air getting in the line would cause fuel to flow back into the tank. I really suspect that the long cranking time may be a problem not with the fuel system but with the glow plugs, You probably need to replace the plugs as they are not pre-heating the combustion chamber properly to allow ignition of the diesel fuel. To start a diesel motor with out glow plugs you have to crank the motor until enough heat is generated to ignite the fuel. Glow plugs are not very expensive and fairly easy to change your self.
if you have changed the glow plugs and it still plays up try changing the leads that run to each glow plug if that doesnt help theres a pre heat box relay which is for the glow plugs should be somwhere near inner wing check it is clicking over after you turn the ignition to start position youll get the pre heat light on the dash once that goes listen ans you should here the box click .hope i could help
The glow plug relay is responsible for the duration of glow plugs, this needs to be the starting point. You should get a 12v out for so many seconds when ignition is switched on.
I have taken the cover off relays in the past, cleaned up the internals, sprayed with circuit cleaner and got plenty more years out of them, worth a try.
does the glow plug/coil light flash at all???? once would indicate glow plug relay fault! three times would indicate FUEL pump failure! sorry never experienced two flashes....
As I understand these systems the ECM is not what powers the glow plug relay. Any kind of engine controls happen after the engine starts.
There should be a power relay which feeds the juice to the glow plug relay. When you turn the keyswitch to start and the light for the glow plugs goes out you should hear a clicking as the glow plug timer cycles juice to the glow plugs.
The glow plug side is a separate system from the fuel management side. Someone should check the glow plugs to see if each is good. The diesel system used to be simple and it sounds like you are complicating what should be a simple repair. I could be wrong, but it does not sound like the Dealer is selling you the parts you need.
A diesel needs a heated combustion chamber to initially fire and then it runs by compression. Perhaps if you change the power relay from the vehicle you removed the ECM from and tried it in your truck it would work with your old ECM.
Hi im shane from s l autos we have a fiat scudo from new v reg 19 td had it from new 100,000 miles now all ways been good but there now there is a eletric propblem start uo fine and then 2 to 5 min just turn off like if u was turning the key off now i have cange ucu and a lot off the other main parts from one off my other scudos but still the same .i thought it was the pump cutting off as the imobolizer is in side now i find the live and put a test light to see if the power is still there when the engine stops ,so now there is just a faint light and its makeing the grow plug relay cick so i thoght i cut the live wire to the pump and put a live feed from batter to pump to see what happens ,,it runs but i get the engine light on dash comeing on and off and all so the grow plugs light ,, Now does that mean it is the pump ???? because if so i got to remove the pump to get the swich out off the pump
many thanks people as i been of the phone to Fiat and i think i have forgot more than they know lol
cheers shane
The operatoin of the glow plugs heat up the combuston chamber before turning over the engine. ONce the fuel hits the combustoin chamber , The fuel will ignite.
The diesel engine only runs on air and fuel .
The glow plugs are basically a resistor that heats up the combustion chamber or pre combustion chamber.
So if the glow plugs are getting power now that the relay is change out , Yes the glow plugs have a major roll in starting the engne.
if only 3 plugs heat, probabilly one of the two pre-heat relays is defective ( or it's command ).
The relays are located left in the engin compartment, just in front of the battery and in the battery box. They should have green connectors.
If there is no fault found at the relays, but on their 'command', the pre-heat control box is located IN te vehicle under the steering column. ( Black plastic box with 4 screws, and a 16 or 20 position connector for engines with EGR )
