Remove cover.take off back wheels and calipers (or drums).turn differential to where you see small bolt/pin (5/16) horizontally (same direction as axles)on right side of differential.remove bolt/pin.A large pin (about 5"long 3/4"diameter) should slide out differential with ease ( you may have to tap one side of the large pin).turn differential to completely remove large pin.turn differential so you can see in the view window.push each axles in (they'll go in about 1 1/2"each) You may hear one of the axle C-clips fall.If not use a small telescoping magnet to remove the C-clips from the axles through the differential window.pull each axle out about 10"so they are out of the diff. Now remove the cap bolts(4-5/8"bolts) and remove the caps(mark the caps so they go in excactly the way they came out.be careful the diff might fall out.If not you may have to use a long bar or 2x4 to wedge and pry the differential out. Have a basket/crate w/rags in it to catch the diff.TIP:If you are removing the ring gear from the diff, the bolts are left handed bolts meaning you have to turn them clockwise to loosen and counter clockwise to tighten ; )

How do I remove the rear differential from the housing

if you have the retaining/side bearing caps off then you pull the differential assembly out of the housing, sometimes its stuck in place and requires to be forced loose to remove.

How to install a new rear axle in a 02 gmc sierra 1500

Jack it up ,pull the wheel on the bad axle side, remove the diff. cover,
remove the small pin holding the large pin in,slide the big pin out ,push the axle in from the wheel end, remove the c-clip in the axle and slide it out.
Would be wise to change the seal at the end af the axle tube at the same time. Slide the new axle in ,put the c-clip in the axle ,push it back in the carrier and reinstall the large pin and keeper pin,"Right Stuff" sealer makes a good cover gasket,3/8 drive for the fill plug, some gear iol and you're done,,not a bad job,no special tools required.

How do i find out the right gear ratio ring and pinion is for my 95 gmc half ton 4x4 is

Hello: Stand in front of the rear axle, facing the back of the truck, scrape off the paint and rust from the axle tube going to the right wheel. It should be stamped on the axle housing. Or you can count the teeth on the ring gear in the differential. (you have to remove the cover to do that.

Need detailed manual or assistance in replacing left rear axle seal and bearing on 2005 GMC Sierra pickup with 5.3L engine and a 324 rear end

You'll need to remove the rear end cover, remove the pin in the center pumpkin, push axle toward the center of vehicle and remove the axle clip, pull out axle. You may need a bearing puller to remove bearing.

Want to change gears in rear end for posi traction in a 98 gmc25000 is this possible?

It is possible, you just have to know what gear ratio you have in your Sierra. I had issues with my son's rear differential and did the Salvage Yard and picked one up for $250.00 with less then 45,000 miles. Remember new cars end up at Salvage Yards also.

Here are the Pro code for the rear ends to your Sierra and you can match one up at a Salvage Yard.
GQ1 -- AXLE REAR, STD RATIO
GT4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 -- AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GU4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 -- AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 -- AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 -- AXLE REAR, LIMITED SLIP (POSI TRACTION)

HC4 -- AXLE REAR, 4.56 RATIO

Open Your glove box and look inside it. Should be a list of codes on the bottom.
Example: GU6 G80 According to that, you'll have a 3.42 posi

Good luck and keep me posted and call around Salvage Yards, there prices will differ from one to the next salvage yard and don't ask them for a posi rear end. The cost will you more, just search all the SUV's and look at the pro codes in the glove box. Hunt, most awd system SUV will have the G80 rear end.

Good luck and keep me posted.

Have a 95 seirra 2500 pickup rear axle seal and bearing out, do i need to go into the differential to pull axle?

Depends on what kind of axle you have. Is it a semi-floating axle, or a full-floating type?

Proceedure for replacing 2003 gmc sierra brake back plate

I have a 2000 Sierra it has a one piece backing plate that was half rotted. I removed all hardware( caliper etc ) cut off old plate. I then bandsawed new one piece plate in half , attached two overlap tabs on the halves, and sprayed the outside surface with stoneguard spray to protect them. When you install the hardware the two halves will be held securely and the stoneguard will help to keep them from rotting off again.
Or...... do what the gmc engineers do , remove the rear differential cover drain the fluid, pull the axle shafts and replace the plates as one piece. About $100 extra in oil and gaskets. Thanks GMC..

2000 gmc both rear tire oil leakage.

You are correct, it's not brake fluid. Check the level in your rear axle, it sounds like you have bad seals in the axles allowing the rear differential gear oil to leak inside the brake drums.
This is a heavy weight oil, 80 or 90 weight. This leakage will ruin your brake pads, and if enough leaks out, your rear differential will blow. The seals aren't expensive, but it's a lot of labor to pull everything apart to get at the seals, plus new rear brakes. My Ford ( and I'm sure your GMC) require removal of the rear axles to change the seals. Good Luck! countrycurt0
