Problem for Chevrolet 1995 C2500

Magnet fell out of rear differenital...where does

By backhash on Sep 14, 2009

" "
The rear differential had a hole. So I opened it up and found that there was a bolt and a round magnet rolling around. Well, I purchased a new differential cover and am trying to install...but I don't know where the round magnet goes. A new one came with the cover and gasket I bought from napa.

magnet just gets stuck on the inside of the cover. It will stay there and will not come loose. Of major concern is where did the bolt you found come from? Are any gears damaged?

Is it possible the magnet was fixed to the plug and broke off? On many vehicles the diff plug will have a cylindrical magnet attached to the backside of it, and it will break off the plug with age. If the new cover has a loose magnet, place it near the bottom so that the shavings collect in a location they will settle in and not get away.

That bolt that you found might be for the pin which holds the spider gears in place. Check to see if that bolt has fallen out...you don't want that pin to slide out or you will have a mess.

Take a clean rag and wipe out the bottom of the axle housing. This particular axle has a magnet placed in the housing, so make sure that any ferrous material is cleaned from it (other vehicles will have a magnet located on the inside of the diff cover). A deposit of fine silt-like material on the magnet is perfectly normal - remember that there's no filtration of the fluid - but chunks are bad (and trust us, shrapnel poking through the diff cover is worse).

The book says to place it in the bottom of the housing. as stated above
