W reg diesel ford focus estate not starting

I have a w reg diesel ford focus estate. The car starts when cold, but if it has been running for a while it doesn't start. I turn the engine and the engine turns over, but won't actually run. If/when it does start a huge amount of black smoke poor out of the back which clears after a minute or so of running. It is almost as though the engine is not getting enough or getting too much fuel on my trying to start it. Someone mentioned a sensor and another a pump. Is this expensive to fix?

Their is a control valve between the inlet and exhaust manifolds ?? with a vacumn pipe running to it ,ECG ,just pull the thin vac pipe off and try that .If that doesnt work then take to diesel specialist firm and have the pump overhauled ,it could be problem with the electric controled cold start ,or an electric sensor problem ,but try the vac pipe first

I have a ford focus 1.8 diesel x reg 1999 girlfreind put petrol in it about 3weeks ago we have drained it all re fueled it and it started and run but now it wount start

poss the fuel filter has petrol in it,replace filter, turn engine over with fuel line unattached to clear lines then fire up,should be fine.you may hve a hot start problem for awhile but fill up with diesel at 1/2 tank to dilute any petrol left.in 32 years in the trade i have put petrol in so many diesel cars, and as long as it starts, keep it running, and start only when cold ish.

Ford Focus 2000cc Estate, Very difficult to start when engine is cold. will run great when finally started, Tried de-clutching, waiting for Dash lights to go out, Throtle to the Floor, Etc. Can you please...

Possibly the battery is a little weak (have battery load checked at auto parts supplier) if engine turns over slowly when cold start. Run 10-30 oil or 5w-30 if you live where it gets really cold. The engine computer may not be setting the cold-start routine. If the check engine light is on, rent a scanner, read any code(s), and pursue to repair(s). The throttle should not be pushed at all when starting.

Since you're running diesel, you might need an engine block heater. Even the largest vehicles need to keep the block warm when the winter temperatures drop. It keeps the engine oil & fuel looser.

Clutch vibrating

Two reasons for this. Rattling is usually faulty pressure plate which means clutch overhaul. Depending on which Focus some have a rubber mounted flywheel which dies and must be replaced. Either way its gearbox out and check. First check all gearbox and engine mounts, but it sounds more serious.
