It is computer timed have you replaced the timing chain? and need how to set it up from the beginning? if your getting pinging you need to do a top engine clean to allow the knock sensor to be able to adjust the timeing.

Is the engine from the bonneville a 3.8 too. If its is it will interchange, Just make sure you use everything off the 98, like all the sensors ect. The basic engines are the same its the add ons that will be different.

Check to make sure the radiator fan is coming on watch it for ten minute as it runs it should come on if it doesn't replace the fan relay or the fan coolant temp senson located on engine block upper area of engine.

BACK IN 1989 BEFORE YOU TIME THE CAR YOU HAD TO PUT IN BYPASS MODE THE ELECTRONIC SPARK TIMING.FIRST THING YOU DO IS WITH ENGINE OFF.CONNECT THE PICK UP LEAD OF AN INDUCTIVE TIMING LIGHT TO THE NUMBER 1 SPARK PLUG WIRE CONNECT TIMING LIGHT CABLES TO THE BATTERY POST.TIMING LIGHT CABLES ARE COLOR CODES RED CABLE FOR BATTERY POSITIVE BLACK CABLE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.RUN ENGINE UNTIL ITS OPERATING TEMPERATURE.LOOK UNDER HOOD ON RADIATOR TOP SUPPORT FOR TIMING SPECS.YOU WILL NEED A TACH METER FOR SET IDLE SPEED. I am having a difficult time locating the turn signal flasher on my 2000 Pontiac Firebird. Could you point me in the right direction.


on my 94 Firebird it was under the drivers side dash near the fuse box. it was round. hope this helps.

Hello smileynv: My name is Roger and I will answer for you.The 1988 Pontiac Firebird had a 2.8 v-6 engine. The timing set at 10 degrees in drive. The 1989 pontiac Firebird has both the 2.8 and a 3.8 engine.The 3.8 engine a DIS (direct ignition system) Had no distributor. The timing was preset and controlled by the computer system. There was no way to adjust the timing. Please rate the answer. This way I know it was useful. Should you need further help please just ask. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
