Question about 1987 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

87 cadillac has starting problem after sitting for a period of time, or when parked on slight incline. Seems like fuel drains back into tank. Have to pump pedal for several minutes, some times for 20 + minutes until fuel is smelled before car will start. Have cleaned injectors and carborator, plus changed fuel filter.

Had the same trouble and turned out to be the ignition control module and was not a fuel problem at all. It is located in the distributor under the rotor. Cost about $25 and is pretty easy.

I believe that car still had the modified version of the Quadrajet carb on it. They are noted for having fuel bowl bottom plug leaks. In that case, the fuel is not going into the tank, but draining into the intake manifold. To fix that, the carb needs to be removed and a good fuel proof epoxy needs to be put over the plugs to seal them off.
It's been a while and I cannot remember if the base plate needs to be removed to do this but I don't think so.

Did you pour in some type of fuel stabilizer before you parked it? If not, drain the fuel tank and refill it with fresh gas; replace the fuel filter again.
Unleaded fuel will separate after a short time and can cause a number of problems afterwards until everything is cleaned out.

If the incline is too steep, and your fuel levels are low, the gas may not be getting to the pump? Does the same thing happen with a full tank, half tank, etc?

My car seems to be starving for gas

Yes you may replace your fuel filter and check for the adjustment of the carburetor float level. Try also cleaning the whole carb specially the metering orifice and other small passages.

I backed my 1997 explorer into a slightly inclined parking space and left it running when I returned it had shutdown and the check gauges light was on and it will not restart.

If the incline is steep enough, you may have had enough angle on the tank to allow air into the fuel line and it will act like you are out of gas. Try coasting off the incline and starting on flat ground.

Chevy uplander ran out of gas and now it won't start

I had a similar issue with my uplander. They don't have a reset switch on the pump but if the vehicle is CLOSE to running out of gas and you happen to park on a grade where the front of the vehicle is pointing down then you may have trouble starting the vehicle until it level's out.

All I did was apply some gas pedal while starting and it started. Then I got to a gas station ASAP. If you're right out of gas you may want to add some to the tank and let the vehicle sit in the ignition on position without starting it for a minute or two to get some fuel back in the lines before starting it.

The fuel is bleeding back to the tank. makeing it hard to start in the morning.

sounds like the check valve in the fuel pump is not closing causing fuel to drain back.
