A loud whining noise under load would generally point to an alternator with either bad bearings or internal issues. Alternators are rebuildable and can be tested on the vehicle by a good rebuild shop. You can do an overhaul yourself but suggest you have it properly tested at a shop. Even a drop in exchange /rebuilt unit should save you 30%.
If the internal electronics in the alternator are problematic they could cook your battery if left unchecked

I have a 96 Oldsmobile siera 3.1L starter makes a whining noise but sounds like it's coming from the back of engine.

Fred, if starter is making a whining noise, it may be on it's way out/faulty. Take vehicle into a good shop and have a good tech. diagnose and estimate repair.

The engine will have to be removed and inspected, to find out what has happened. Big expense, may need replacement engine.

Loud humming/whining noise coming from engine

Remove the serpentine belt and check the pulleys on the front of the engine. There may be a bad idler pulley or other component. Replace the serpentine belt if it hasn't been done in a few years.

I have a loud whining noise coming from my ac compressor. i have a 98 cadillac deville and it makes the whining noise even if the ac is off. it makes that noise the whole time the car is running

The A/C compressor constantly turns because the pulley is connected into the serpentine system. The whining noise is pretty indicative of a low charge in the A/C system. I would start by having your A/C pressure checked and charged if needed.

When i start up my 98 cadillac deville there is a loud whining noise from the ac compressor. Will my car run without the ac compressor or will i need to spend the money to replace it?

The car should run okay without the compressor, you just won't have A/C. The cooling fans should still operate with the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It is also possible that you just need to charge the A/C system. A loud whining noise is indicative of low charge to the compressor.

High pitch tone from my 2001 chevrolet S-10 pickup

You didnt indicate whether you ran the engine with the belt removed while replacing the alternator,if not do so and verify noise. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, best way to diagnose would be with a smoke machine if not available with the engine cold try spraying carb cleaner around the intake & any suspect vacuum hoses with engine idling look for a change in idle speed or elimination of noise. Hope this helps you out

Loud whining noise after the intake manifold was put back on

If its a sucking noise the intake is pulling air in somewhere. Try an old mechanics trick, get some wd-40 and crank the engine up then spray it along where the intake bolts to the block listen for any changes in the engine rpm. If you hear changes then the intake is pulling air.
Good luck and dont forget to rate.

A high pitched whining noise in the engine.

This Noise Description sounds Indicative of the Sounds that come from the Serpentine Belt Or Related parts such as Belt Idler Pulley or Belt Tentioner witch also has a Pulley, but if Tensioner itself is Literally BROKE I've replaced a number like this it will cause a Whining noise . Best case scenario its just the Belt, and if any of the other Problems turn out to be the Culprit the Belt MUST be Replaced Anyhow as Damage is Being caused By the Very Whining you hear.
PLEASE Spend the Extras $ for the BEST BELT as this Drives your Water pump, Alternator, A/C Compressor, Power Steering Pump All Crucial to Control of, easy Steering ,All Electrical-Power Distribution, The COOLING of Engine << VERY CRITICAL Component
The Pulleys usually have a more Hum type Whining. So I would say at Best The BELT , And WORST Belt Tentioner is Broke
