My electronic display seems to fade out when there is a rain storm of which water is getting into something or another. I dont know what it could be, my windows are power generated also and the battery indicator doesn,t respond either. What could be the problem?

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The fading of the dash lights occurs due to moisture in and around the dash circuitry and MFD(Mid faci display). You'll need to remove the dash to remove the display and dry it to resolve your issue. Please follow this procedure--

1) Remove the black trim around the cluster. This is held on by two 7MM screws on the top of the trim piece. There are also 2 clips on the bottom. Remove the screws and give it a firm but gentle pull towards the wheel.

2) Now you will see 4 black 7MM screws holding the cluster in the dash and 8 silver T-10 Torx screws holding the cluster together. First turn the key to the off position, not the lock position, and put the gear selector in Low 1.

3) Loosen the cluster by removing the 4 black screws and pull the cluster towards you. There are no other cables or clips holding it in. There are only two plugs in the dash that it plugs into. Just be careful not to break the shift indicator cable that is on the cluster. You can't buy just this piece from GM.

4) This part would take your time and be sure to pay attention to how this comes apart. Take out the 8 Silver Torx screws and put them aside. Now the whole front of the cluster is loose. Take off the clear cover, then the large black trim behind that, then the thin black piece, and the shift indicator with the green window. The indicator with the window you will have to put aside but remember BE CAREFUL of the cable.

5) Now you will see the display in front of you. There are 4 RED TORX screws holding this to the cluster. Remove these screws but be careful because these are the only things holding this display to the cluster. There are no other wires or nothing. This is the problem. When you take this out, you will see two rows of soldered dots on the display, one on top and one on the bottom. Clean these with contact cleaner or alcohol. You will also see two black towers with little spring loaded tabs in the cluster. Clean the entire assembly with 100 % pure rubbing alcohol. Pull them up very carefully and put a bit more tension on them and all the others.

6) Now just reverse the above procedure and you should be in business. Just be careful of the Temp. Gauge needle when you put the thin black trim piece back in place. What I did was put the cluster back together and then just push it back into place and tried it before I put all the trim back.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

1999 volvo s70 problems What must I do to get the rain water drainage system working properly ?

Do you have a sunroof? Cars have drainage holes up there that often drain into the door jamb on the front doors and sometimes down the rear pillars and behind the trunk/boot lining and exit the car near the wheel wells. Often, the connection at the top to the pipe comes off at the top corner of the windscreen.

Others have the same problem. Sunroof drain mentioned and how to fix.

Have a 04 excursion 6.0L diesel. have been driving it with no problems then after a rain storm it will not start. Batteries are fine, no fuses blown, but won't crank. Ideas?

When say wont crank..Do you mean it will turn over but not start,,or do you mean it wont even turn over..I work on 6.0 liters all the time,,and you really need a scanner to see if your FICM has gone bad or other electronics...Plus your high pressure oil pump could have went out..They dont really give you much warning on them engines when something goes out..

My 2010 porsche panamera had a leak under the right front dash board which caused water to spray in during a rain storm - carpet was soaked - they claim the car was missing some parts (drain hose - ...

I had the same problem. The Porsche Panamera has two evaporator lines . All other Porsches have one. The dealer did not know this..!! After three visits and two removals of all the rugs they discovered the second evaporator line. They unclogged that second line and it now seems the problem has been fixed. It was certainly interesting to see sudsy water on the entire floor after a trip to the car wash.

You forgot to add WIND to your experiment! Poured water is not driven water and sometiomes the pressure and VACUUM of the moving vehicle is the problem. As you drive a vacuum is created around any area not directly exposed to the airflow. This can "pull-up" seals that are tight when you are still, and also there is a possiblity that the water came from underneath your car!!

Water leak on fwd and back passenger side after every rain storm

pull your carpet up near the leak area and look for muddy body seams. it is possible one of the factory body seams are leaking- possibly in the cowl(under wipers) area, especially if it leaks when the car is sitting. there will be dirt/mud around the seams that are leaking. also you can check door seals by running the car on HIGH DEFROST with all doors and windows closed. spray around with a 50/50 soapy water solution. obviously bubbles will form around your leak.

I think from memory they have a rain sensor...could be it's damaged. See your local MMC dealer with your full chassis number and they might be able to check if your model has a rain sensor and where it's located.
