The fuel level sender is bad and will have to be replaced.

The sender can be purchased by itself and is much cheaper than buying the pump module.

Typically, this issue is the sending unit. The problem is most of them also have the fuel pump mounted on the same thing, so the cost jumps to 400 bucks or so.

Be sure to take precations for fuel vapors, and drop lights....

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

This problemis always caused by a defective fuel level sensor. The level sensor islocated of course in the gas tank. To change the level sensor you must remove the gas tank from the truck.

VW Golf 2000 Faulty Speedometer & fuel gauge

Hi you need to check the wiring into the back of the instrument cluster first, sounds like a bad conection, you could also have a faulty intank sender unit for the petrol gauge.these cars are known for dash failure and can only be programmed by the dealer(UK) they also suffer with corrosion to the in tank pump/sender unit plug.if you disconnect the plug (ignition off) you can see and clean if required.
