Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency
Help! College daughter's 1994 olds 98 rear seat belt (behind driver seat) is stuck in a re-tracked postion. How do we get it out? I assume it may be twisted in there, but we can't get to it to find out. The top or shoulder part of the belt moves normally, the bottom part coming up from the side is what is stuck...
Do we need to pull the back seat? How do we do that?
Nope typically, you need to extract the seat belt roller mechanism. Carefully you need to open the covers, do not bust any catches, get a strong light. Where you need to wind up looks like a ratchet. Along this ratchet is a catch that needs to be manually released.
This release is not always very easy, often the belt being tight restricts surgical access.
If you even think that you may have damaged or tweeked something during this process, replace the whole belt. It is your life that depends on it.
I have never had to replace a seat belt, so it is not too fragile, just be carful.

If brute force doesn't unstick it remove the back seat and pull the cover off of the reel. The problem should be apparent. You can turn the reel with a large screwdriver if need be.
If the belt is damaged find another one at your local recycler, the side reel is behind a plastic panel that is easily removed, the assemblies are held in by big bolts.
