starter wont disengage even when ignition is off. had to disconnect battery

Can anyone tell me how to find out if the Aveo 1.6 Automatic engine and gearbox are made in Korea or Germany or indeed any info. I want to buy a 2008 Aveo but am hesitating because of the Korean engine. How would I tell the manufaturer on the engine itself ?
