This specification should be on the engine, on a sticker, or the radiator support.

Valve clearance on suzuki vitara 1999 1.6

  • Set the engine to Top Dead Centre (TDC) of the compression stroke for the cylinder to be adjusted.
  • Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:

Intake valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm) Exhaust valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
  • After adjustment, tighten the lock nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
  • Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.

Why adjust the tappets when engine is cold?

adjust the tappets when cold allows you to get the engine running with out causing valve or engine damage
you do the final adjustment when hot as the stem expands in length and takes up the cold adjustment
if the cold adjustment is too close because you didn't make that adjustment the the valves will not seat properly when hot and will burn the edges of the valves

Whats the worst that could happen if I've adjusted valves incorrectly?

If the valves are too tight, they don't fully close. That can "burn" the valves, causing an expensive repair job to replace the valves. Too loose will make tapping noises and eventually can wear the cam.

My car won't stay running when cold.I replaced the idle air control valve, and it didn't fix the problem.

The idle air control valve is designed to adjust for the load on the engine to maintain the idle quality. When it's cold out, it's more important that the engine temperature sensor is working correctly so that it can trim the fuel richer to compensate for the cold running conditions. Also, a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor could give you problems with your idle. A shop could easily diagnose the poor idle quality for a reasonable fee if you don't feel like throwing parts at it again. Have you experienced unusually poor fuel economy or better than normal fuel economy this winter?

open hood , look up. see white sticker, see clearances.?
    off online F.S.M
Valve clearance specification when cold :
    59 to 77deg F or 15 to 25deg C (engine temps)
    Intake: 0.0063 to 0.0094 inch (0.16 to 0.24mm)
    Exhaust: 0.0123to 0.0153 inch (0.31to 0.39mm)
you must remove the bucket, tappet , to change lash.
MIKE IT (that means a micrometer)
then buy shims or new buckets to fit. (generic answer)
the book says buy correct tappet after measuring, yours.
and it's out of range, and doing the math first.

    that is it.

    Valve settings

    - Pull the hand brake and put transmission in neutral.
    - Remove spark plug cords.
    - Remove the spark plugs.
    - Remove the Tappet cover
    - Lift up the left front wheel.
Cylinder number 1 is toward the pulleys and belts side.
    - Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise with socket and extension rod and bring the valve tappets (intake and exhaust) No. 4 cylinder on dancing position.
NOTE: THERE ARE OTHER WAYS ALSO TO ADJUST THE FOUR VALVES AT A TIME. BUT AS DIY FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING METHOD TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION.
    - Adjust the valve clearance of number 1 cylinder.
    Valve clearance:
    Intake 0.18 - 0.22 (cold) Exhaust 0.25 - 0.28 (cold)
    - Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder 2 on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 3 cylinder.
    - Similarly rotate the crankshaft to bring the valves of No. 1 cylinder on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 4.
    - Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder No. 3 on dancing position and adjust the valve clearance of No. 2 cylinder.

Can you set valve clearances on a 1997 clio 1.2 engine.my engine sounds as if the tappets are noisey.

The tappet clearence should be in the owners handbook but it's a bit early a tappet noise from the engine (2006) ! Check oil level and change if it's overdue a service is definately worth a look ! Good luck

rx7`s should rev to 3000 when started cold then it should settle to 750 to 1000 after about 30 to 60 seconds.
mine suffers a similar problem. so far I have been told various answers, mostly involving the bac valve, lambda sensor, air flow meter, etc. try starting of by adjusting the idle adjust screw (on top of the throttle body under plastic cover) this may be all it is. I have not had time to do mine. Its been fine otherwise and idles fine after a few minutes. mine is non turbo 87.
