The easiest way to check and see if it is the ignition switch or relay is to find the small stator wire on the starter not the one from the battery but the small one on the side of it on starter turn the key on and see if it is sending power to that wire if it is then the ignition switch and relay are good. Also check and make sure you are getting a full 12 volts on the battery cable to the starter and to the stator wire when switch is on. If you are not getting the full 12 volts or nothing at all then the switch is bad. But is could also be in the computer friend has a 92 dakota that was doing the same thing and his computer was bad.

Problem with 1996 GEO Will not spin the motor sometimes

Watch and listen as you turn the switch. Do the dash lites change the same each time? Do you hear a click, which would be the start relay? If these changes and noises don't always happen the same, the ignition switch is wearing out.

1994 geo tracker won't start

first have the battery load tested as it indicates that there is a dead cell
If there is a dead cell then the dead battery will consume most of the power from the jumper so there may not be enough left for the starter and the ignition
to check for a power drain , install an amp meter i the battery to ground wire and see what current draw is occurring when everything is turned off
up to 1/2 amp indicates that the ECM is using power for the memory
up to 2 amps indicate a light on--glove box, boot , interior radio etc
more indicates a problem relay

It sounds like a fault in the starter circuit. It could be a defective neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, or possible a defective ignition switch but I doubt it. Can you hear the starter solenoid??? I'm willing to bet the problem is either with starter relay, neutral safety switch, or starter solenoid.

Won;t crank

Hi, if the car engine fails to crank, there is a fault in one of the components in the battery/ignition/starter circuit. Low battery (Check battery voltage, recharge if low, or jump start with another vehicle or battery charger). Bad starter relay/solenoid (Check for voltage at relay, if relay has voltage but there is no "click" when key is turned to start, replace relay). Bad ignition switch (Check to see if voltage reaches starter relay/solenoid when turn to start. If not, check for open P/N switch and brake or clutch pedal switch. Replace ignition switch if defective).

It could be the starter, test the small wire going to the starter, it should have power when turning the key to start/crank. If it does, and the starter will not crank the engine, whack it with a hammer, if it then starts, replace the starter. If there is no power to the starter, then it could be the ignition switch, or the neutral switch, or a fuse/link blown.

Engine will not turn over. lights, horn, everything else works, no clicks, no nothing, but it will not turn over.

You're describing a no rotation issue and not a no start issue correct? If you dont hear/feel the starter relay clicking, it eliminates everything in the circuit to that point meaning the ignition switch, Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) (you don't have a neutral start switch unless you have a rare manual transmission), ground input from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the starter relay coil, and starter relay are good. Based on what you've said that leaves the primary battery cable from the battery to the starter, and the wire from the starter relay to the starter solenoid contact on the starter. Have you checked their continuity? One more voltage to check at contact 30 (input volts from battery to starter relay contacts) on the starter relay socket. Should see 12vdc all the time.

You should check the battery. The true test is a load test. Does jumping the battery using jumper cables make any difference? If it starts, change the battery. I take it to check the starter you jumpered the solenoid contact on the starter to the battery correct? Have you tried wiggling the battery cables as you turn the key? They can corrode and fail internally. Are the engine and chassy ground connections clean and tight?

Almost certainly its the relay. In the fuse box there will be a number of box like objects. One of these is the starter relay. Check with manual and replace the relay. Sometimes you can get some temporary relief by tapping the relay or removing it and replacing it. If that doesn't work you'll need a new one.

ignition relay probably stuck...could be an oddball short between ignition relay signal wire and another hot wire, but highly unlikely...replace relay
