Question about 2000 Ford Expedition

My 2000 ford expedition will not pass smog test due to P0102 code causing the service engen soon light to stay on I think it might be the mass air flow circut dose that sound right if so isis that circut on the throttle body and is it a easy fix im on a low budget and would like to buy the part myself and repair it

The mass air flow sensor is in the air intake between the filter and throttle body. The filter is in one half of the air box and the sensor is in the other. You should have a wire harness running out the bottom and a connector toward the top. When you split the chamber to access the air filter, tip up the half to your left and you will see it. Sometimes you can get by with cleaning it, but you may not have a permanent fix. You must ONLY use a cleaner that does not leave ANY residue, such as brake cleaner. Make sure the connector is fully engaged, and check for bent or pushed back pins. Sometimes the pin locks in the hardshell were never fully engaged and the pin connectors push out the back of the plastic hardshell connector. Hope you save some cash on this one. I realize how costly repairs are these days. Well wishes.

code p0102 refers to mass air flow (MAF) / volume air flow(VAF sensor-- low input===causes --wiring short to ground---MAF/VAF sensors---ECM
I would replace the MAFor VAF sensor after having each one tested to find the faulty unit.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit

this is the AIr meter (measure air mass not volume)
it reads low, but can be caused by.
1: air leaks (aka vacuum leaks) in the whole induction system.
from air meter , to the intake valves. the whole path !!!
2: too low idle speed, 800 is par. if lower fix that now.

the test is simple. using a voltmeter to see if the air meter is really bad. boy scout simple.
ask for the tests.

it shows the simple tests. (the saturn FSM does too)

im not sure the defunct Saturn co. uses PCM. if it does, its hopeless.(DIY)
most MAFS are analog and any cheap meter works, any.
PCM is modulated, (a ford trick. to avoid.)

I check my MAFs. from keyon,, then start
then racing in idle to 3000 RPM
and if a A/T , i do a A/T tranny stall RPM test. (see tranny tests)
as the same time, this act puts huge load on the engine.
(a free dyno) for 5 seconds max, (overheats tranny the trannysections say that, and is true. read it.
then see output of MAF hit near 4v. this is a good maf.
can elaborate and show pages doing all this and more.
just ask, if all that is too hard,
find an ASE mech, he knows how to do this.

keep in mind no ECu on earth knows what is wrong,
it only can report bad tests. NEVER WHY!
Only the mech finds the truth. by adding more tests.

I have a 2001 mustang bullitt that is showing service engine light on. Took it to mechanic and he put 2 different machines on it to show code for problem. No codes coming up and he can't turn off the...

There is a diagnostic procedure in the factory service repair manual for engine light lit ,no codes . Did you take it to ford dealer ? MIL - is referring to check engine , service engine soon etc...
  • MIL always on when engine is running (no DTCs):
  • MIL circuits
  • For Focus, Mustang, Town Car, Continental, LS6/LS8, Escape, Windstar, F-150, Expedition and Navigator/Blackwood:
  • Instrument Cluster, Section 413-01 of the Workshop Manual.
  • All Others:
  • GO to NB1

SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within five seconds, the instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

  • An indicator is inoperative/always on - SERVICE ENGINE SOON
  • Circuitry.
  • Bulb.
  • Instrument cluster.
  • PCM.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test P .

  • Did the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminate?
Yes REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

- Excessive Fuel Consumption
Possible causes - Intake air leaks

- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks

Possible solution Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes of the problem.

Hi, Since you have both codes Fuel system lean and MAF low I would bet money on that you have an intake air leak after the throttle. Check all hoses connected to the intake manifold, gaskets, injectors are put in place etc.

Service engine light is on

if the check/service eng soon light is on a problem has occurred in one or more of the electronic systems of the emission system/engine management, it is very rare you will feel anything, the system has very good failure mode programming to keep that from happening, at this point the only thing will be that it won't pass a smog test, or the mileage may be affected. Have a test run to see which codes are present in the computer memory.

primarily lookm at the pcv hose noturious for collapsing
