Question about 2004 Mazda 6

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Mazda 6 with the 2.3 liter engine. I have replaced the altenator 4 times and the battery twice because the battery light comes on and the transmission shifts to the 3rd gear. When the alternator is replaced it is charging correctly. However, a few days later it is no longer charging correctly. I believe this to be a voltage regulator problem, but I was told that the computer regulates the voltage.

Mazda car battery pilot ight in front panel was found "On" while driving from home. After completing the journey and returning home, battery was found dead, ie could not start the engine. Why and...

The light you describe is not a pilot light, this is an indicator that the battery is not being charged (It comes on when you first turn on the ignition, before you start the engine because at that stage, without the engine running, the battery is not being charged. Its being on when the engine running is a warning that you have a fault).

Hence, the reason the battery was flat after the journey is because you used the power in the battery to run the engine, illuminate lights and indicators etc.

Causes for the syetem not to charge the battery are usually 1 of 3 things.

The fan belt that drives the altenator has come off. This belt usually drives a fan or power steering or both, so if broken, you would probably have other problems. - Check that the belt is on and not slipping

There may be a fault in the wiring, so your altenator is not charging. Check the plug on the back of the altenator and check around the general vicinity for damaged or faulty wiring

Most likely cause is that the altenator has failed. It may be repairable or require replacement depending on the fault.

Please add a comment to this thread if you need further guidance.

2004 Mazda 6 Battery Life is SHORT!

Was this mechcanic certified? It sounds like your altenator has a weak diode or regulator instead if the car does start every day. To see if you have a bad diode take a volt meter and set it to the DC switch for direct current. Have the red probe to red (POSITIVE) and black on black (NEGATIVE) It sould give you a reading of 13.5 volts when the engine is running. If not switch the red wire from the meter to the black (Negagtive) on the batteryand the black wire from the volt meter to the red (Positive) to the battery. If you get the same reading when inverting the wires you have a bad diode. A diode only lets current flow one direction. If it shows flowing both ways it will under charge your battery causing it to die out
