Starting and Charging

All starting systems are basically the same in operation for manufacturers. The starter takes power from the battery to crank the engine. Generally the large wire on the starter is from the battery and the small wire is from the ignition switch. The large wire will have battery voltage on it all the time, the small wire will only have voltage when the ignition key is turned into the start position.

The altenator on all vehicles is designed to provide power for all car electronics while the engine is running, there is a large wire (usually red) that comes from the battery, and two to three small ones that come from other circuts to regulate how much power comes out on the large red wire.

The only relationship between the altenator and starter, is the battery, it is important to remember that the starter takes power in the form of amperage from the battery, while the altenator send power in the form of amperage to the battery. Thus an altenator can never be the cause of a vehicle that will not start. These two systems only share the battery and other than that they are not connected.

Sounds like a bad altenator. Usally accompanied by starting problems. To check the altenator, disconnect the battery while the vehichle is running, if the engine dies when you disconnect the battery, then you'll be looking at a bad altenator. If altenator checks good, then post back with a more detailed description of symptoms.

What could cause an altenator not to get power

Alternators give charge not get a charge. Check that you have connected up the wires to the alternator correctly. Check drive belt for tension and condition. If it still will not charge have a qualified auto electrician check it over.

Charging system alt does not chareg in truck. Bench tested O.K.

Measure the voltage at the big wire on the altenator engine off, do you have power? Check in your distribution box under hood, find the two rows of fuses located inside the box on the outer edge, look at the outside row from front to rear the 4th fuse (# 11/ 20 AMP fuse), is for the altenator field, make sure this fuse is not blown, if it is good and you have battery power on the big wire at the altenator, then replace the altenator. Hope this helps, let me know.

Cars lights are going bright and dim . changed out battery today and alt tested fine.car ran fine again until tonight then back to losing power

mcdevito75 here, Sounds like the regulator inside the alternator, re test altenator with the headlights off, then on, any lower reading from the altenator with the headlights on, could mean a bad regulator, in the altenator, all 1 unit altenator gets changed.

Checking the power steering fluid levels

the power steering resevoir is underneathe the altenatror or your vehicle. you have a gm 3800 series II engine the resevoir is located near the fire wall on the passengerside right under the altenator. the easiest way to check this is to remove the altenator. I say this because there is not much room to put your hands in that area because your coolant overflow tank is there as well. disconnect the ground to the battery first. then disconnect the power lead to altenator. remove serpentine belt. then remove the plug from the altenator. remove the bolts to the altenator and move the altenator aside there you will see the resevoir for the power steering. installation is in reverse order... please rate this......thanks
