Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

The rear suspension is down on my 1999 Ford Expedition - Eddie Bauer. The cause: while out in the woods I came across a small dip (front right) which caused the back left wheel to lift off the ground. sequence of actions: While the back left wheel was off the ground, the suspension system caused the rear to pump up to the max height. I placed a small rock (4" tall) under the left rear wheeland and the Expedition backed out easily. The rear was still at max height. Upon getting to level ground, I then heard air exhausting from the front then the rear suspension sat down. After about 5 minutes, I shut the down the engine then restarted it 5 minutes later. The compressor did not run. I drove the expeditin home and it still did not pump up. I exchaged the compressor with a known good used one. The compressor ran then upon startup; however, the rear suspension is still down. The compressor runs for about 2 -5 minutes but the rear is still down. I cannot hear any unusual noises while the engine and compressor is running. I put the original compressor back in and it now works; however the rear suspension is still down. The "check suspension" never once came on. I've checked & reseated all fuses associated with the suspension system. ...help

I followed the lines as recommended and found an air line open - the splice (just above the left shock) had released. I pushed the both ends of the air lines into splice togather and ran the engine but air was still escaping the splice. I'll have that fixed tomorrow. Thank you!

You have a seal that has not seated correctly or been damaged on one of the Shocks or an air line that has been pinched when the rear end lowered. To isolate which side is bad remove the air supply from each side in on the rear end and test them one side at a time. Plug one side and connect the other and see if the connected side will raise. If it does then you know the other side is bad. If not reverse the process to test the other side. Basically the good side is going to raise and the bad side won't. Check for a pinched line between the compressor and the shocks first and if there is one raise the vehicle with a jack to clear the line and try running the compressor with it jacked up and see if that solves the issue.

Front or rear ? Either way rear are on axle just inside leaf springs and the front should be just in from tires going up to inside wheel well .

I have a 1999 ford expedition Eddie bauer and my air ride suspension pump is coming on about every 10 minutes or so.this is not normal.what's wrong? What do I check first?

Your air suspension is leaking, could be a air bag or line or a fitting or a dump valve. Get a spray bottle full of soapy water and start spraying down the air ride components and watch for bubbles.

They are round "cans" with wires attached. You should have SSA, SSB, SSC, Torque converter and Pressure Control solenoids. They control pressures and have no mechanical linkage.

I had a 1999 Expedition. When you put the 4x4 on it raises the vehicle an extra inch or 2.
It may help to turn the 4x4 off. Two wheel drive is a lower air setting.
Your original pump may still be good. The problem can be in the front. The compressor is not filling the front suspension to the cutoff point. It will lift the rear after the front end is at running height. Since you lost the front end first, the remaining air bled out there and then the rear came down. Once you shut down the car the suspension was done, all the air was let go.
There are adjustment solenoids on the body but you need someone qualified to repair this.

'99 eddie bauer, cold air in the rear hot air in

you may just be low on freon. The rear will often work ok when low, but the front won't

The same compressor serves both front and rear systems. Check that first.

ALso, check to see if your front blend door rotates when you raise & lower the temperature.
