Same as Shelagh. The diagnostic computer said it was a failed Throttle pedal sensor and at my garage they got same result. So I spent £145 replacing it but the problem remained. I can drive but can't get full power, but it will pack in before long. New test found another fault with another electric part but garage will look at everything on Monday.
I had an 03 model for 3 years, no problems. This is 55, pain in the neck so far.

Yes you need a diagnostic tool to read the error code and from there carry out any repairs.
SOURCE: EAC FAIL FORD FUSION 03
I have an EAC failure on my wifes 53 reg Fusion 1.4 and it's been off the road for 2 months. An independent check showed fault code P2135, which relates to the throttle body but fitting a body from a healthy Fiesta with the same engine didn't solve the problem. I was advised to check wiring to the body but all seemed OK. Took car to Ford who stated that the car needs an updated body and wiring and the parts are on back order with first delivery not due until Jan 2010! Why the car won't work with replacement original parts is a mystery. I'm very disappointed with Ford. Sorry this doesn't solve the problem but hope it clarifies the situation.
